Car choice again! Two completely different options!
OK.
As I've stated on here before the choices on my car list at work are rubbish. The two best options are two extremes really and I have no idea which way to go.
Option 1 - BMW 320D Efficient Dynamics
Pros:- Power, "drivers car",RWD (Troy Queef reporting), badge (I wish it didn't matter but it does), mpg, big enough most of the time, cheap tax now and in the future as emissions 109g/km
Cons:- Bit spartan - just enough equipment, too small some of the time, either white or black (already discounted flat red)
Option 2 - Superb 1.6 SE Greenline
Pros:- MASSIVE BOOT, loads of equipment, mpg, good metallic colour
Cons:- Tax is 116g/km - above 110 so prone to future banding changes, bit slow and underpowered - 100bhp is not a lot for a 1500kg car.
The head says Skoda, the heart says BMW.
What do the Snet massive say? don't bother saying you could try this or that as the car list is so rubbish, the two cars here are the best of a bad lot!

What are you going to do with it?
If you need to haul stuff you need a Skoda.
If you need to slightly impress other badge snobs who don't care it is poverty spec then you need a BMW
If you are going to spend a lot of time in it i'd like toys and comfort so you need a Skoda.
Not sure what difference the emissions will make to be honest but since it is work buying, i'd go with the one that suits your work the best.

Steve, will you have another car as well, or will this be your only car?
If it's only for work stuff then get whichever one is most practical. If it's the only car you'll have then I'll jump off the fence and say it will be a cold day in hell when I would drive a Skoda. People can say what they like about how good they are blah blah but life is too short to have to look in the mirror and see a man who drives a Skoda.
As I said though if it's a load lugger for work then treat it like having a van or a truck and just buy the most practical one.

You are into cars. The BM is RWD and much quicker but as thrifty. Never mind the spec. Options weigh more and slow cars down. Get the BM - the engine is a near modern miracle.

That is the long and short of it.
I don't need the big boot for work - just a laptop, an overnight bag and PPE.
We will have another car at home, my wife's A3. She wants a new A1 but if I get the 320, she'll get another A3 for the drop seat boot capacity.
It's looking like the BMW is coming up hard on the rails.
But for the record, it would be my third Skoda but the other two have been the vRS versions....

Skoda....Superb is a fantastic car.
BMW very nice, don't see many 320D's around too
Only had a spin in a friends 2.0tdi 170 Superb and it was just that...not sure about 1.6 jobby though
Reality is,I'd want a bit of oomph so 320 d
Surely vRS tdi Octavia must be cheaper than a 320d BMW?? or at least a pokier engine option in the skoda for still less than the BM?

You are right MB.
The best Superb I could have with the 140bhp engine would be an S trim which is pretty basic but bloody expensive to tax!
The best Octavia would be an Elegance but again, daft to tax for the car. If there was a vRS on the list, I might have stomached the tax but not for a 'normal' car.
The 1.6 Greenline Skodas are cheap but slow and dull. The Superb is a nice place to sit.
I'll make my mind up after running the Beemer over the weekend. See if I can tolerate never being let out of junctions

The 320ED will be competitive with a vRS.
Hire a van when you need a big boot and get the better car
I love Skodas, but not ones with engines that couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, 0-60 is something like 12 seconds compared to 8 from the 320ED.

Well, I've has the 320 for the weekend and the order will be going in on Monday. white with black interior.
I might ask the supplying dealer how much to get a film tint on the rear windows and colour the wheels a anthracite type colour. There is a 318 MSport in the showroom with some nice wheels that I'd like my mighty 16" colour matched with.
I'll also need some new car seats as mine didn't seem to fit that well.

In that case it may be cheaper to go and have the tints done at a GOOD tinting company.
Don't know whereabouts you are but I've used a company in Burton on Trent who are one of the best and highly regarded. ( and used by BMW, Audi etc)
