Default Golf GTI tyres

225/40R18, need a set of four, would like an all-season as it is just my wife's commuting car and can't get out in the snow on summer tyres, but can't get all season of that size anywhere I can find in the UK, unless I import from Tire Rack, then I have to check for E-marking etc.

The ride quality is also hateful. So looking at used or replica 17" Monza wheels like it would have had without the factory option of 18s. Are these any good, and does this car ride better on 17s? Then I have UK available all season options.

The genuine Monza II 18" wheels and 3mm tread ContiSport Contact tyres could then be sold, but they do have corrosion damage.

MOnza 17s are widely available on

You'd probably find that there's a few people who will swap.

Agreed though - the 18s are form over function. The 17s have a much better ride quality - chose mine in preference over the 18s.

FWIW, the whiteworm corrosion was a warranty issue - probably a bit late now.

Mine's running on Contisport contact 2s - and yes, it's sh1te. But that's the tyre.

not much use, but hope this help in some way

Dan

forgot to add - and take this in the +ve manner it's meant(!), if the car brings you both some much displeasure, why not get shot of it? The amount of -ve posts you've had on this subject is considerable, yet you still hang on to it!
FWIW, in moments of such despair, why not just go out in the GTR - all will be well with the world again!!
I have the same relationship with wifey's GTi6 - french POS imho! To overcome such moments of depression, I go out in the Golf (shows you how bad the 306b must be!! )

Can't see any all seasons in 225/40R18 on mytyres?

Already had four or five 18" wheels under warranty, some of them twice.

I want to get rid of it, she wants to keep it. It hasn't broken recently so it gets a reprieve. It is very cheap motoring, better the devil you know and all that.

My mate replaced the Continentals on his 09 GTi with Toyo T1R`s and he says it made a huge improvement , they are cheaper too :

Good tyres Captain John, however, I wouldn't necessarily class them as "all season"....

Summer? definitely.

FWIW, I've just had some ContiSports 245/45/17 on my MK5 today.

The difference is akin to comparing night & day!
Think they were Dunlops before.

VERY happy

2cm wider than stock? I'll avoid Dunlops then as the ContiSports or the 18s are woeful. Poor ride comfort, poor traction in the wet, not very quiet, poor steering feel (weight is OK, but little feedback), and obviously gash in the snow. In the dry they go where you point them though and you can manhandle the car using the limited stock engine performance.

Toyo T1r's are a really good tyre, not all weather but an all round performance tyre.

It has good residuals and economy, and when it doesn't break it is cheap to run, and can be fun to chuck about in the dry.

The biggest issue is the ride comfort, followed by tyre and engine noise.

No, typo 225

IAF, the car's traction is sh1te in this weather (-14.5 here, so GOD knows how bad up in bonny Scotland! )

I personally would put the "crapness" down to the 18s. They look quite nice, but rubbish (imho).

But agreed - the Dunlops were rubbish. Wanted Pilot Sports, but there IS a recession
