bmw 3.0d engine questions please
hi i'm looking at 3.0d bmw cars at the moment and have a couple of questions i'd like some help with if anyone knows;
1. is the same engine fitted to the 3 series as the 5 series ?
2. i've noticed that their are 2 engine powers 197 (i think) and 203 (i think), what year did they change and is one much better than the other ?
hope someone can help
thanks

Same engine in the 3 and 5 series, the 3 series had the M57 184bhp 2962cc engine from 2000 up till early 2003 where the newer M57n 2993cc engine came out with 204bhp.
The later engine is supposed to be be the better lump but it comes with swirl flaps which can kill the engine, the earlier 184bhp doesn't have the flaps in manual transmission but the auto does.
The 184bhp remaps to 230bhp/360lbft and the newer engine remaps to 250/400lbft, if your unsure which has the earlier or later engine then look, at the cc size of the engine. The later engines are 2993cc and only come with a six speed gearbox, not to sure about the 5 series but the above info is for the 3 series.

thanks for the help so far
great web link for the engine information but i think those proposed remap figures stated above must be wrong all the info i've seen states even in the lowest power version the car is still as least 390flb and with a remap will go to over 450flb so i'm quite happy with that
don't understand all this swirl flaps business and it may be a major factor as i'm planning on going for an auto
