Default New car help please.

Now the 172 has gone, i need a new car by Sunday as my loan car has to be returned to Mother.
I am prepared to spend upto around £3.5k. I want a car which is suitable for sitting at 80 on the motorway. I'm currently driving a fizzy zetec S 1.6 petrol which i'm sure is super frugal around town but out on the motorway - it ain't so i guess a 1.9/2.0 diesel is the order of the day.
I want a/c and maybe cruise control with a touch of street cred and around 60k (i do 25k / year). I really don't want a Focus and the sort of money i have doesn't stretch to one of the newer Astras. I think i've set my heart on a Mondeo (my life is so dull) but am worried about their abilitly to have clutch problems which costs £700+. Tony Burns found a good one on piston heads but the ad has elapsed so the contact details has gone.
Anyone with any wise words/suggestions or even a sub 60k mondy they want to sell

The £700+ DMF problems can apply to any diesel with a DMF though, I will be converting to a solid fly wheel and so that bill is halved.

Look at Vectra CDTi's also.

What cars out there have the DMF?
Vectras have caught my eye, if not just for the fact they do 2.2's. Bigger is better

Not the most exciting cars, but should do what you want it to. We had a 1.6 petrol as a second car a while back and it was great.

Comfortable, solid, reliable. Was well made too. Drove nicely, but not that exciting.

Cheers for the start - the Vectra looks good but is too far away. I live just south of Wakefield. The other 3 have big mile which i would like to avoid.
I am actually looking at Focuses as for the kind of money i have, i guess they are the best value
