Default BMW M5

been looking at M5`s you can now pick up a 2005/6 model for under £30k. same sort of money you pay for a new sti. alright the fuel consumption for the urban cycle is quoted at around 13mpg but in my eyes thats an awful lot of motor for that sort of money - 500+bhp combined with comfort and every additional extra you can throw at it - very very tempted.

Cars like that do seem like a 'bargain' but one thing to remember is they still have mega bucks running costs.

You WILL NOT make 13mpg around town unless you hardly touch the throttle. Most of the cars i see (london dealer) have 7-11mpg as an average mpg. However they are insanely quick! Too quick for most day to day uses in my mind. Would rather a 550i m sport with a good remap.

you could of had mine for £20k 55 plate as that what I got for p/x on the new M3
great car if you can afford to run one !!, will only do 11 mpg around though so dont be fooled that you will get 15 mpg ....they are the bargain of the year imho

Not true.

Had mine for a year, very fast.

Don't quite understand people buying these and then complaining about costs. You are buying a car that can keep pace with Fezzas and Lambos, a super car in a luxury saloon shape.

Ok so its not the e60 V10, but I am on my 3rd e39 M5 V8 and all I can say is that yes compared to other cars they do have double the price for parts, but that's generally because there twice as big and possibly last longer to!

One thing I will say is that in all 3 owned I have never had any reliability issues whatsoever! Seems if you look after em they last! there's a guy near me in Glasgow who's got 190k on his e39 with original engine and its still going strong!

Funny thing is people put out scare stories about BMW M models. If you research the car you are buying, there should be few problems. They are fine alternatives to Porsche.

Can't undestand why anyone would consider an M5 and then focus on running costs........its an expensive car with 500 bhp ffs (look at the new price? no? )....which bit of "its an expensive uber saloon" don't you get ???

If you can't afford expensive then buy something cheap and make it fast

Sorry to spell it out and come across as harsh but I really find it difficult to understand why some people expact a car like that to be anything else....

Right I've calmed down now

I really wanted an E60 M5 to replace my Spec C but just couldnt stretch the budget that far so I got an M5 diesel in a 535d has the exact same extras but does 30-40 mpg

M5 next year though depending on what the petrol prices decide to do

well typed my man, mine was £65K+ new , had just change the fr brake disc and pad at about £1K+, oil service will set you back around £400+ from the stealers as its need 10 litres of Castrol TWS @ £14.95 per litre !!
had a headlight control module replaced ...the bill was £560+ !!! just to get the headlight to work ( as they need to encode the car ecu just for replacing the module) .
cars this advance with all the electronics are bound to be expensive to run .
I now have the E90 M3, and it hind sight should of kept the E60 M5 as that is a better car in every department expect the smg gearbox(as the M3 DCT gearbox is just brilliant ).

Extended warranty, covers major mechanical faults like diff, engine, gearbox, props, ecu's, steering rack, water pump, pas pump etc. It is a wise investment, however if you saved the money you'd put into extended warranty anf used that as a pot to dip into if something goes wrong, you'd probably be better off in 95% of the cases of faults arrising.

They're cheap for a reason £60-70k cars still cost the same to run even though you can get em for £25k ... Perish the thought than an expensive part might give up the ghost!

I've had mine for about 3 years now, my average mpg is 11.

I don't think they are mega expensive to run as such. In three years I've spent about £1500 on servicing and about £1200 on tyres.

The biggest expense has been fuel. I went into it with eyes open but the fuel bills do still hurt. It is however a 500 BHP 2 tonne machine that will keep up with supercars so thirst is to be expected

Which bits not true, being a bargain in terms of cost compared to new or they cost a lot to run?

I know its 500 bhp but 11 mpg seemed epic even bearing that in mind, are all cars of 500 bhp so thirsty, surely there must be something that can crack 20 mpg if you are carefull, I know you dont get a car like that to be economical but 11 mpg, if nothing else you are at the petrol station every ten minutes !

I beleive Corvettes arent bad if not provoked, but then I suppose they are made fromm Glass fibre and are quite a bit lighter.

I think it has a 70 litre tank, needs SUL at about £1.23 a liter, so say 86 quid to fill, call it 15 gallons, surely you cant get through 86 quids worth in under 170 miles !!! ?

It's only a 70 litre fuel tank too - 165 miles per fill up (at £80 a go)!

Even if you can comfortably afford that much on fuel, stopping less than every two hours to fill up must get tiresome.
