I just had a long conversation with Mark Fish from Mark Fish Motorsport (have prepared Clio and R5 cup cars, and currently d0 Clio V6 cars in Europe) about induction kits.

The main problem with the 172 is that is is very difficult to get cool air into the engine. If you use an induction kit (cone filter), then it is going to suck in warm air and you will lose performance. You can try things like cold air feeds from the front grille/bumper somewhere but you have the problem of making sure that water does not get to the filter element, and that the airflow is constant. Pipercross do a viper kit that may help, but some will say that 250 quid is alot of money for a small bhp increase.

Mark advised to stick with the standard airbox, and the standard element. Replacement ones are ok, but as they allow more air through, they filter out less potentially dangerous particles and in an engine of this sort, that can reduce its lifespan.

Unless of course you want the noise of an induction kit on a Clio(ask RR attendees at PE in January about that !!)

So there we have it !

I think mainly because of the large size of the engine and small size of the engine bay means that theres not much room to get any air, let alone cool air into an induction kit. The standard air intake on mine is from a pipe that is routed down in front of the front passenger side wheel at floor level.

Well, my mate has a Green induction kit on his Clio 172 and that's fine!

He has got the cold air pipes from the original air box directed to flow cold air onto the filter and he has had no problems.

I also have an induction kit on my Pug 106 Gti (also bugger all room under the bonnet) and that also has a cold air feed to supply the filter. It is fine except for when sat in slow traffic it sucks warm air and feels sluggish, but for normal driving it's fine.

You are right though... a Clio 172 with an induction kit on does sound f*cking ace at full tilt with the VTEC kicked in!

Similar situation with my old 206GTI - induction kits actually result in a loss of power on the 206 due to large engine/lack of space issues.

I had a Ramair Suparam induction kit on my car for 3 months. It went on the RR at PE in January and got 168bhp which is a couple down (should be 172bhp) but torque is up to 151 lb/ft (standard is 147.5).

I may try the Pipercross Viper kit but its 250 quid..........
