BWW X5, have noticed lately that there are some very nice ones comming up on the seconhand market at what seem like bargain prices, talking 51 plate fully loaded versions at around 8.5k.

so okay any advice on them ?? best model / engine to go for ?? just how poor is fuel economy ?? how quick ?? diesel version the better option ?? insurance - just how bad ??!!

look a lovely looking motor and sure what make a lovely family car.

anyone able to persuade me otherwise ??!!

First time I have heard that one regards the X5 !! thought it had more off the gangsta image more than being a hairdressers car ??!!

your probably right --- but either way both images are a bit pants

but probably really good cars -- I have heard that the on-road manners are A1 and that off-road they are let down by the ridiculous tyres

anyway what do I know about image, I drive a Audi and a Toyota Lancruiser - Pikey Special

I like X5's. Love to have a 3.0d sport model. In Estril blue, cream leather. Friend works for BMW, and they suffer from serious tyre wear, if you go for the bigger wheel option. Also, as they are the 3.0d engine ,got to be aware of the inlet swirl flap issue too.

Scoobynet isnt a fan of the X5, you will get the **** who put the car down due to its image, or the fact that an estate will be a better practical car, but I say **ck them, if you like one, buy it :-)

I have a 3.0d Sport in black (well it's the family car). Can't really fault it other than being a bit boring.
It has everything TV / Freeview / rear DVDs / heated electic memory seats / auto wipers and lights / black leather....the list goes on and on. It's 4 years old, 22k miles, FSH, 9 months dealer warranty, paid less that 20k.
Also had a 4.4 pertol on a 51 plate and an audi Q7. Audi was ok, but went back to the X5 as it is just a little bit better everywhere.
Put a few k motorway miles on it recently, getting about 35mpg.


Oh and most peole on here will have a pop at it, got into many arguments before on here about the x5 and it likes.
Doesn't change the fact that it is an excellent bit if kit.

Our X5 3.0d sport has now done 103,000 miles and is probs the best all round car I've ever owned. diesel is the way to go, petrols cost a fortune to run unless gas'd.

If you can live with the image- which, frankly, doesn't concern me one bit, you won't find much else that will carry kids / dogs / luggage, tow boats / race transporters quite so well. Its pretty comfy too.

In all honesty we'd normally have changed it by now- had it since new in late 2005- but its been that good we'd just buy another anyway and I can't see the point.

I fitted the 20" alloys recently off the Le Mans edition- they look ace, but it doesn't feel as planted, curiously- as it did on the slightly narrower 19s.

It depends what you want from a car.
For; Luxury in abundance, Toys, Space, Towing ability, Reliabilty, Great road manners for a tall motor( still a bit rolly for me though).
Against; Thirst even the DERV. Nearly a £100 to fill the tank. I borrowed my friends to go home from Reading to Inverness, I filled it up and departed. I had to re-fil at Perth about 440 miles it took £85. it averaged about 28 on the m,way i wasn't hanging about though. The entire mileage was 1300 i put £230 in it for that. Tyres £250 each. Plus servicing, dealers are dirty thieving scum.
My pal recently test drove a Rangey sport TDV8 the bimmer was streets ahead in the on road department, the RR has 260ish bhp the bimmer 186bhp and the bimmer was is more responsive, faster and a better drive. The RR p!sses all over the bimmer of road though.

It is what it is though Chris- a two ton slab of pig iron. I took my daughter to Uni in Bath on Saturday, Formby > Bath > Weston-Super-Mare > Bath > Formby. £87 to fill from near empty, done about 490 miles so far and from memory its showing about 130 to empty- which is probs about 80 in reality.

Bear in mind, that's five people, luggage, two dogs and cruising at circa 85ish.

Not bad in my mind... my STi would have used a lot more and would have been a lot less comfortable.

I think the X5, older version, looks lovely. During the begining of the credit crunch, petrol 4.4 / 4.6 were loosing money hand over fist. I was quite tempted to buy one then. I love the overall package, looks and quality of the car and in estril blue, looks lovely. However, value wise, if you compare what they cost to buy / run, and you look else where at the other alternatives, then they look quite expensive.

I compared them to merc's, landcruiser, RRS, and in the end, pound for pound, found that a Mitsubishi Shogun Diamond, i.e the new model, diamond version, was a better buy.

It comes fully specc'ed with leather, camera, satnav, toys, 20" alloys, etc etc, and for around 20K, you would get a 1 or 2 year old one, still in warranty and far more reliable. There's far more space in the Shogun and it has fold flat rear seats which the X5 didnt have. They can be chipped aswell.

Compare that to an X5, then you will have to get an older model, not as well equipped, higher costs, and the Shogun does the same sort of mileage. Ive got an older Pajero, 2.8 LWB, and I love it, and reckon they are bullet proof.

I dont mind the Shogun's looks, the newer model looks lovely, didnt rate the older one 3.2 warrior ones, but hey. I suppose it comes down to you either like the look of a truck or you dont. :-) Obviously an X5 has a `better` image and has more car like feel to it.

The worst thing about the X5, is the dealers. I truely hate my one, from the way I can never park there, to the fake smile, to the over hiked prices, but I suppose most dealers are like this.

Which ever one you go for, all nice cars :-) I actually prefer trucks to cars now, must be my age.

we have a 4.4i sport it's fantastic i'ts great to drive 315.0 bhp and 325 ft·lb only downside is it averages about 20 mpg but coming from a lwb pagero 2.8 td there is not much difference in mpg .go and test drive one you will be very surprised

Im another X5 4,4 sport owner and it is a great car!!! Yep £100 to fill the tank but so what! My old 400bhp Scooby did less miles to the gallon and never had tv's with dvd and playstation in the back to keep the kids quite on long drives like my X5 does.

I all so have the 4.8 20 inch wheels on mine what really sets it off nice! 315/35/20 on the back £300 a pair off ebay for toyo's and 275/40/20 on the front at £250 off ebay again to my door.

The only thing i would say to worry about on the older car's is the gearbox!!! They go around 80k and mine cost me £2300 to have a new one fitted 2 years ago. Sounds alot but my PPG in my scooby cost more then that not fitted!!!

Other then that lovely car and a lot lot faster then most people expect!!!

I only know what it is by what the car tells me and around london it says 17.9 most of the time

On long runs you don't get over 21.9 but i never ever hang about

i reckon that's pretty good around town

i have a Amazon 4.2 TD and I only get slightly more -- maybe 20mpg local driving and 24mpg on a run

Sounds about right, does make a decent rumble with the foot down

I have 3.0d sport now and I don't think it is that much slower, could be wrong though, I sold the 4.4 about 3 years ago, so hard to gauge.

Yes the rumble is lovely!!! Thinking about changing the 2 back boxes to see if i can get it to sound like a RS4

A friend of mine has the 3.0D and i find it slower then the 4.4, it all so seems that he dose not get that much more mpg in it over the 4.4

Shed any light on that one for me???

Pretty sure the 4.4 is a good bit faster that the 3.0d, just hard to remember. The 4.4 wasn't stupid fast and the 3.0d isn't stupid slow.

As for the mpg, I never seen 20 in the 4.4 and yet to be under 20 in the 3.0d, actually managed 34 on a motorway run.

However the 3.0d doesn't have a loud pedal so you tend not to put the foot down as much.

Drive the 4.4 like a ***** and 3.0d like its stolen, then you will be in the same ball park
