I'd love a Defender, but would it make you look like a cock?

Default I'd love a Defender, but would it make you look like a ****?

I keep looking at these, as there are quite a few near me, but they mostly seem to be parked up all shiney and polished.

I can't help thinking these look best when dirty and "used"

The model I like is the hard top one.

So what are your thoughts on Landrovers that generally sit on drive ways and the most off road they see is B&Q's car park?

YES

Unless you're a farmer or need to go off road then you can get away with it, if you're driving around in a nice shiney one then you just look like a wannabe country bumkin.

PS it's the same as all the ***** in the Range Rovers.

rubbish. not everyone who wants some space and luxury wants to drive around in a people carrier.

Cookstar, if you live in a big urban area, driving around in a shiny new defender does look a little gay.

If you like to drive off road at least once a year though, go for it!!

...just don't wash it.

If you want a Land Rover without looking like a ****, get a series 109" or 88" ......

Then people will just think that you are mad

A Defender is very compromised for a town car - noisy, slow, drafty, etc - I'd get something a bit "softer" for town.

However they are utterly brilliant out of town and the latest ones have a healthy dollop of torque - even though it's a Ford Transit engine! I did a 24 hours test drive of the XS 90 (top end) and really liked it. Reliability is still an issue though.

I'm still undecided about the whole 4x4 thing at the mo, she is nagging to chop the 530 in for an X5, she has wanted one for years.

I know I shouldn't but I'm starting to come around to the idea.

I'd say go for it. If you want people to think the local drug dealer has turned up every time you arrive somewhere.

Seriously I cant even imagine why people would want a Chelsea tractor, they have the worst image of any car you could drive.

Stick 20" alloys on the 530 and fit a booster seat for the missus.

Sorted

I've got a Jeep Wrangler - take a look here - hopefully not too gay

My wife has a Range Rover - I love it (apart from the fuel economy thing) - we need something 4 wheel drive as we have a boat & slipways are not much fun with most 2wd's

Guy i work with has just bought a fully loaded supercharged Ranger Rover, because he's just become a Dad. And all it does is provincial runs on the tarmac of suburban Essex. He's a chav in all but name and this just proves it in my opinion. Almost as bad as an X5.

I have a Discovery 3. It never sees off road apart from when I go shooting but the space and comfort is perfect for what I want. The only car i'd replace it with is a 535D Beemer.

Back on topic though, I know someone who came into money and bought a Defender 110, lives in an urban area and it will never see off road. Looks a right tit! its even got a snorkel ffs.

I have a 90 which looks mean. But it gets very heavily used off road on the weekends.

Really not a good car for the road, but sooo goooood off it!

I think that anyone that drives one for whatever reason looks a bit cool as they are such hard work, not like X5's and the like.

try one and see if you like it,i used to have one and while it was nce to have such an icon it really was horrendous on the road-your elbow hits the window when you turn the wheel, theyre draughty, leaky and noisy but undeniably cool. however il never have another-just got an old shape l200 warrior which is much better on road and not far behind off road as long as you fit proper tyres.
and will people stop picking on cars such as x5's rangerovers etc-its not their fault that idiots buy them-an x5 is perfectly capable off road if driven properly, just because people dont use them for it doesnt mean they cant do it

Yes you will look a complete nobber unless you are the ' Farmer Palmer' type. Such considerations hardly ever colour my choice of vehicle so if you like it buy it.
Do have a test drive as they are great in the fields but awful on the road.

If you like the vehicle, buy it. Doesnt matter what car you get, there will always be someone who doesnt / does like it, but what does that matter ?

IVe got a 4x4 pajero, hardly ever go off road, but it meets my young family requirements interms of space. An estate would probably do the same, but I like being high up and love the 4x4 when the weather is crap. Also, if she crashes it, people in 4x4 have a better survival rate. It costs a ton to fuel, but the advantages out weight the down disadvantages.

I also like the RRS / X5 and ML, think they look good and i like the character of them. I like the Land Rover defender with the 4 door, pickup part at the back ( not sure the model name ) but its a little `rough` inside, as I like my creature comforts.

Buy what you, yourself, likes, and stuff anyone else. Half the time its jealous that makes people slag these things off.

Typical response from an Urban 4x4 driver, is it something to do with having an inferiority complex?

Absolute tripe, there are cars on the market that are safer. Fifth Gear did a test on this not long ago.

If you avoid putting a "one life live it" sticker on it then you should be ok. The minute you put that sticker on there you turn into a ****, its a fact.

Boyakasha -

Inferiority ??? To who or what ? What a **** thing to say.

Safety ?? Yes there are cars on the market safer, but on average a 4x4 is safer than most other cars. Im not referring to flipping over at 70 mph if you suddenly turn the wheel, Im talking about shunts, junction hits, etc etc. This was shown on Fifth Gear as well.

I dont need to look at a report to know that my pajero is more solid than a citroen ax / vauxhall estate.
