I just got an additional car to my Scooby; a 1969 Ford Capri 1600GT. The condition of the car is very good as you can see and everything is still original (incl. engine), although the car will need a respray (the paint is bubbling in some places) and there are few interior trims missing.


Anyone out there fan of these cars? I wanted to ask:

1. Is there suppose to be one or two lights for teh rear license plate?
2. Can you tell if this has a XL or XLR trim? And would they have had a badge on the fender?
3. Where can I find to buy the rear shelf?
4. How much do you reckon this car is worth, as is?
5. Is this color common with Capri's this age?

Personally I bought it as a small investment and have something to work on in the weekends. Also might be tempted to part exchange it with a 1970 Toyota Celica.

1. You have two, pretty sure my facelift has two as well ? Maybe a later bumper ?

2. The R trim used to be diffeerent style wheels, optional satin black bonnet and scuttle, map light etc. But the opton packs were mix and match, quite tricky to tell which model you have. They can have a badge on the wing - for new ones look here : https://www.burtonpower.com/product_main.aspx?home.aspx under Body and Styling, Badges Classic Metal - XL, XLR etc.

3. Parcel shelf - try one of the capri clubs or old Skool Ford forums.

4. Value ... difficult to say, but if it is sound then what you paid is fair.

5. No idea about the colour - I don't have a chart to hand. Looks period.

I am a bit biased ... like the MK1s myself, created a few as 3D models, and even tramped in a Cosworth V6 GAA.

If I'm not mistaken the color is Fern light green and existed when purchasing the car new.

Back in my old man's Medallion days (Yes he really had one) he always had Capri's.

I only really remember the last 2 (but he had more than that) and they were a White 3.0S which he had for 2/3 years before it got knicked. He then got a Black 2.8 Special which lasted 4 weeks before that got knicked.

Upset and angry having 2 cars knicked within a year, he bought a bog standard 1.6 Sierra.

My first car was my dads old 1969 1600 GT-XLR, reg was OJA 375G, originally in Silver Fox but he resprayed it to white with a Black Vinyl roof in about 1980, we had it until about 88/89 and it was around for a good while after that, was taxed until recently so may be still around.

I really want another one, yours is stunning, it should have wing badges just aft of the front wheel, a long rectangular 1600 GT badge and above it a round XLR badge with a sort of wreath design roudn the side, I think also it should have front spotlamps, also a centre console, sculpted rear seats, six clock dash, overriders on the bumpers and possibly a chrome trim above the sill. Some had the black bonnet and the black rear panel where the lights are, also, just remembered and found this again.

Literature

Was at a classic car show with my dad at the weekend, there was a superb 3.0 Capri Mk1, in white with the black roof, really took us back.

The smaller engines get overlooked sometimes but they were still nippy, mine was rebored with a pancake filter and some other bits, was as quick as the XR2, in a straight line at least.

Has to be the Mk1 for me, not the face litfed model as they spoilt the looks on the sub 3.0 models with the hideous headlamps and by doing away with the Rostyles (love the minilites on yours though)

Much as I like Escorts I prefer the Capri, my ultimate is a Mk1 non facelift, looking original but packing a YB turbo, four linked with modern brakes and suspension. I scour Ebay but most are knackered or if any good, very expensive, one day maybe.

very nice that capri the rs 3100 is the one to get but are very thin on the ground now ive owned a 1977 2.0ltr s 1979 3.0s and a 1981 ex rozzer one 3.0s on a w reg ex gmp classic website with loads of good guys on it try manchester classic ford its free to join and they will tell you more

My brother once had one so I knew in generally what is what. And also I took the Capri to a panel beater and a mechanic for a check up before I bought it. I want to keep the car all original, but many people tell you different things, so I tend to stay upon on old adverts for clues.

They do seem to be very sensitive to colour, I quite like that green myself but white, silver, yellow and orange seem to suit them best, to me they are one car that really doesnt suit being painted black whereas the Mk3 looks best in black ?

I like the idea of the V8 engine in these but they were pretty "lively" with a 90 bhp 1.6 GT in, the 3.0 was dangerous in the wrong hands (i.e. me ) so a V8 in a Mk1 would need some serious rear end improvements to avoid utter terror, I remember getting into some serious slides in my Mk1, j4ckos mate will attest to this, entering the airport cargo centre where we worked at Manchester airport, he was in front in his Viva and me in my Mk1, I hoofed it, it slid one way, I corrected, it slid the other way I corrected and this went on for aquite a while, proper tank slapper !

How I never crashed it I dont know.

AFAIK a standard 1.6 Capri was 75bhp.

Correct, might have only actually been 73, the 1.6 S and other "sportier" models had a more powerful 1.6 of about 90 bhp, I had a 1.6 Laser, utter minter but after a having MK1 1.6 GTI Golf it felt flat, slow and ponderous. Remember though, back then cars were a bit lighter and power outputs were a lot lower as a rule, a 2.0S was only 100 bhp, even the mighty 2.8i was around 145 which nowadays is barely warm hatch territory. I went in a Tickford, 204 bhp but felt very very quick flying through Trafford park.

Remember though, back in the day, for most of us, we werent used to stratospheric power outputs and being pinned to the seat, 300 bhp was reserved for supercar owners, not any scally with four grand and a Scoobynet account, turbo's were rare, engines with high outputs pretty fragile and tuning was all about cams, exhausts, flowed heads, K and N's, big valves etc, back then, imagine in 1980 expalining to the owner of a snorting tuned RS2000 with 130 ish bhp that a diesel shopping hatch would have as much power, twice as much torque and then to compound his misery saying that for £300 or less you could change the cartridge in the magic Atari under the bonnet that controls the engine nowadays and get another 50 bhp, I wouldnt mention torque, it didnt exist until the advent of the turbodiesel, it used to be called either grunt, oompf or pull and was not measured except for no grunt, a bit of oompf or pulls like a train.
