ok folks bought an mx5 for some track day fun.only thing is i get blown away on the straights.i want revenge.what can i get cheap to blow away corsas with red top engines.it dosent have to handle.thoughts are subaru twin turbo legacy or a saab turbo dont know which model or volvo 850t5 anyone have any input and if its cheap to up the power thats a bonus.

p.s. I own a saab 95 turbo and yes the torques are fantastic, not sure I'd want to track it, even my Impreza Type R wasn't ideal on circuits..

How about an old Audi S4 (based on the 100) the legendary 5cyl 2.2 series

Should put a few of the newer generation of cars to shame on the straight, an even though its a barge, it doesnt handle like one

Failing that, an S6 or an S2 or if ur really down on cash, an Audi 100 turbo

Mate of mine has a 200bhp 1.6 he uses for drifting - similar power to weight as my STi.

Yep, I have a Saab and even an Aero isnt a track car without a lot of work, heavy, wrong wheel drive, had a T5, similar but with much worse traction and cornering, you can get a Saab to do the track thing but it would be a like a FWD touring car, fast but still FWD, RWD for the track please !

Dare I mention it, dare I summon up the demons, but how about a Soarer 2.5 TT.....



Fiat Coupe Turbo, fine in principle as they handle ok but it will break with the sustained battering they get on the track.

How about a Capri with the 2.9 Cossie or YB in ?

I better the bigger engined last shape 5 series BMW stripped out and tracked up would be fantastic, despite lacking a turbo, 535, lightened, free flowing exhaust etc would be great, if you can find a manual that is.

I started track days in my Puma but wanted to go as fast as the Imprezas.

I bought an Impreza and was then left behind by the EVOs and Jap Imprezas.

I bought an Sti Type R and was nearly the fastest....but the car was too expensive to track.

I bought a Clio Cup and wasn't far off being the fastest and had a lot more fun thatn in the Imprezas.

I bought an MX5 as it was RWD But it broke so I had to get shot

I'd have another MX5 once I have the time and money to run it as a third car.

So you want a wallowy barge for trackdays, that despite its straight line speed will be overtaken on each and every corner by the MX5 you want to replace, which may be slow at gaining speed but if you learn to carry it through the corners you'll be a better driver for it

As the underdog you can never really loose, but if you do well if puts egg on the faces of the guys with the supercars. trouble is your not yet doing well lol

Buy a 9000 2.3T for about £350, spend £400 on konis and abbott springs, £100 for a chinese intercooler, fab up a cheap 3" downpipe and ask nicely on one of the saab sites for a stage 3 T5 ecu remap (beer money) and have around 300hp and 350+ lb.ft. Admittedly it is front wheel drive but its a hoot to thrash and you'll have a constant line of people asking how a old mans barge goes so well....and if you can drive well you be getting held up in the corners by so called superior handling cars, whether FWD, RWD or 4WD.
You can also lug 10 alloys plus tyres, 60 litres of petrol and a tools and still have space for rubbish etc.
Prices have hit rock bottom with saab 9000's, a stage 3 with full suspension mods, brake upgrades, exhaust etc etc went for £295 with MOT a few weeks ago.

Yep, I really enjoyed my laps in Simon's (RRH) Mazda MX5, absolute hoot, I scavved myself a go in an Evo, pretty much standard, said to be 300 bhp or therabouts, sure it was fast but it didnt feel as fast as the little Mazda, a combination of your **** scraping the road, it being absolutely murdered to get the most speed out of it and then cornered on the limit to carry as much of that hard won speed, the Evo just didnt feel as sporty, effective, yes but they are suited more to gravel and rally type situations than track and it didnt feel entirely at home, coupled with the increased costs (it binned a set of tyres in 2 track days at £140 a corner) I think the MX5 (in my admittedly limited experience) the perfect budget track day car.

There were all manner of expensive Caterhams and Lotus going round but unless I was minted I wouldnt want to risk/wreck somethign expensive doign that on a regular basis, a coupel of grands worth of MX5, couple of grand once track readied and you can move the bits to a new one if you break it is more attainable and it isnt the end if it does let go, plus you can give it death.

I think a big old cheap turbo car could be fun for a few laps but having the inside front wheel spin up on a Saab on Volvo would get tiresome, the fact that it wont do what you want would get frustrating, the brakes would probably overheat due to the weight, turbos expire, coolant escape etc.

Ultimate would be a well set up MX5, with perhaps 180 bhp from an engine transplant, XE, Zetec or whatever.

I've got a saab 9000 2.3 turbo that is "slightly" tuned.

Brilliant engine and straight line speed once rolling, but very suspect handling. Wouldn't want to track mine without investing in a lot of suspension bits and better brakes. At the end of the day, they're just too damn heavy for track work IMO.

Good grief its like the 9k mini meet - and I've never owned a scooby! For track stuff the 9k in standard form is not fun, but as Mark says, prices are low now so a cheeky upgrade is easy.
The jewel is that the 2.3 engine is a peach / tough as old boots and the remapping is pretty much open source now...
I just got 448bhp peak crank on a home tune, and an unopened block and head.... (402whp)

dyno run for interest... yuckky boost surge now cured too. Car is toasty too - these are pulls 4,5,6 and intake temps way higher than on the road.

were going to keep the mx5. but im liking this saab 2.3 for some extra fun.will any 2.3 do or any specific model years to look out for.off to look on ebay.

The MX5 is an ideal car. If you want more power stick a turbo or charger on. Plenty of the guys on Northloop run then in varying states of tune. Dale gets his round the ring in 8mins 41 with a stock engine, so they can't be that slow

Any 2.3T 94 onwards, just make sure its got an intercooler fitted...doesn't matter if its a lpt or fpt...the aeros have the better suspension but all are interchangeable, it also has a mitsu turbo rated for max 310bhp, T25's are on FPT and LPT only rated to 280bhp though.
Buy a disco potato, bigger injectors 3" exhaust and chinese intercooler and it'll make 370+ hp with 400 lb.ft torque and mid range performance will take your breath away.

Fit a GT3071 and get more lag but 420-500hp and 400-500lb.ft
It cost me $80 for 630cc injectors from the states, £25 for 3bar map sensor from the states, £100 for intercooler off ebay, £450 for a gt3071 a/r 0.64 turbo off ebay, £350 for full 3" exhaust of ebay and have about 400hp/400lb,ft+ of performance and 35mpg??

My mate has a huge collection of exotic cars from aston martins to ac cobras, he also has a 2008 scooby wrx sti tuned to whatever, however, he bought a 1993 9000 aero for £550 with full suspension upgrade and only 245 dynoed hp (standard, must make more when they are run in with 150000 miles on the clock) he drives it to the track and thrashes it and then drives home...

Was thinking the same. MX5s are good canidates for engine conversions too.
