I'd love to have the time to build something like that, I'm thinking about a 2 litre vauxhall redtop on throttle bodies running about 200bhp in a lightweight westfield 7 shell

My wife thinks it's just a mid-life crisis, but so was the scooby

He says it cost him £8000 all in.

His intention is to keep it for life ..... a really nice 'toy' I must say!

I've seen the Robin Hood from about £1500 for a self build, but you get what you pay for. I might look at some incomplete projects later in the year. I'll have to stop spending on the scoob to save the cash though

Always wanted a Dax Rush. Money and time always got in the way though

Either of these two would do just nicely

totalheadturners.com : Dax Rush

why not just get a civic typr r engine? if you want more power just supercharge it to 300bhp....

I'd love to build one, not too fussed about driving one...not since being a passenger in one that spun onto the grass at the bottom of Clay Hill, Oulton Park...the tyre wall suddenly looks a lot harder when there's nothing between you and it!

A vauxhall redtop would be cheap as chips and much easier to maintian myself as I know the engine. So mainly just personal preference.

Being down so low and with so little wrapped around you seems to heighten the perception of speed, but there's no denying, cars like these are quick. I love the fact that you have to drive these cars, no driver aids or 4WD to cover inadequacy. When I was in my mates Atom 300+ on track the Scoobs in our way looked cumbersome, heavy and very slow indeed. After each pass they disappeared from our mirrors within one corner. Another big plus is that he bought the Atom for £40.5k (high spec) and ran it for two years, then sold it for £39k. £1500 to run one of the fastest, most thrilling cars on the planet for two whole years Finding £40k to spunk on a toy in the first place is difficult, but it's borderline free motoring when you consider the residuals. Probably cheaper than catching the bus

The C20LET would be more tuneable than the C20XE though.... turbo

Actually scratch that - the first time you opened the throttle you'd experience a brief period of joy, confusion, terror, pain and death.

Don't you think that was a bit much for you at your age SSuP?

I did actually have to be assisted out of it ...... I was instructed NOT to use the windscreen as a lever, it would have buckled!!

I felt really vulnerable in it - especially with a 23 year invincible lad at the wheel!!

It shows, beyond all doubt, that top speed really counts for nothing .. it's how you get there that matters!!

they're bloody marvelous aren't they! only been driven in a Westfield on the road but have driven a Caterham on a track. not sure the differences between the two, but they were both great.

kind of like a go-kart with a hyperspace pedal

And no matter what you did, the sound of the throttle bodies would beat the sound of the whisling tirbo hands down

LETS aren't as reliable as XE's.

My mate's got an MK indy with a fireblade engine in it. It's as quick as my 270bhp Classic once it's moving and cost him £6k to buy it second hand. By god though, it FEELS faster when you're in it. All noise and wind, revs to 13k, sequential box (No reverse! we had to get out and push it to do a 3 point turn!)

Loved it!

I had a Westy for 2 years - it was definitely the 'fun car' while the scooby was the everyday runabout. 150bhp or so from a 2.0 XE engine and a throttle response that no turbo car can ever come close to.

It spent half its life in bits in the garage, mind...

My scooby is like that anyway, so no worries there then, other than where to work on the scoob while I build a westy

Was speaking to some who said putting any turbo engine in one of these is daft as when the boost comes in you end up facing the way you came, high end power not torque seems to be what suits these, not big gobs of torque.

I'd agree, you simply don't need fat gobs of torque in one of these cars, they don't have the rear end grip for it anyway. Something like a Honda VTEC is perfect.

Of course, that doesn't stop people putting Cosworth turbo engines in them - and it doesn't mean I'd say 'no' to one of the 3.9 litre V8's they do either

Yes, would be fun to have a go but as an ownership proposition I would imagine it would be frustrating and probably terrifying, would rather be able to give it full boot without terror, only being able to use 1/2 throttle would be annoying, would rather have less and be able to use it all.
