Default Advice on the right car please

Right my daily commute consists of 50 miles. Most of this is driven on motorways or NSL roads so its very rare to be doing any less than 60 - 70mph. I'm after a car that has good mpg but still has a bit of go in it. Probably looking at diesels. Budget of around 2.5K
What you suggest??

A mid sized hatch/saloon with a 4 pot should fit the bill. The choice is pretty good, even with a relatively low budget. Depending on your priorities, the Jap stuff is the most reliable [Toyota Avensis], the Germans are the most frugal [Passat/Golf] and the left field lot are the most interesting [Alfa 156 < my choice ]

Auto Trader UK - TOYOTA Avensis 2.0 D4-D GLS

Auto Trader UK - VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 1.9 Sport TDI 4dr Diesel Saloon
