what do you think of this offer - new merc 220cdi sport
I've never bought a new car before, so looking for some advice.
Am very tempted by this, I love the looks of the sport versions, so its enough to change fromthe long line of BMWs.
I'm thinking of trading in my 2001 bmw 330d sport with high spec toys.
C 220 CDI Sport Saloon
Merc standard deal is this:
- Free auto box,
- 18" amg alloys
- metalic paint.
list price £28,447.02
merc discount
£1,219.41
10k miles p/a
£4k deposit
36 ish Monthly payments of £319
5.8% APR
predicted residual value of £14,625.00 / optional purchase price.
However, I can get the extras above, additionally withthe following extras
- Leather
- Heated seats
- Front/rear parking sensors
for this deal (finance still by MB and dealer sourced/delivered)
Deposit = £4,000
Term = 3 years
Mileage = 30,000 term max*.
First month = £509.21 (includes arrangement fee)
35 months @ £329.21
Option to purchase at end of term at £15,175
5.8% APR
I know the engines are not brilliant (compared to new 320d)
I think that can be classes as a good deal, am I right ?
cheers

It is a good deal - not a patch on your BMW to drive.
Check out Nationwide Vehicle Contracts - in January you could have a personal lease on a 330d Coupe for £350 pcm
It pays to shop around!

It may be a good deal compared to other contracts, but I don't call spending £16k to do 10k pa miles over three years a good deal at all. That's 53p a mile just on depreciation, and you don't have a car at the end of it.
You have looked at what you could get used, say one or two years old, with a bank loan for those monthly payments and deposit?
Frankly mate, if you have, and a C220 diesel is the best you can come up with, well, I'm speechless... Sorry.

As it happens I have the same car on loan at the mo as my 911 is in for some work and I must say its scoring about 4/10 at the moment for me.
Pros:
Ride is nice
Gearbox is fairly smooth
Good ICE
Quiet (the door seals are a work of art).
Cons:
Fly by wire throttle is ****. Limits throttle at low speeds and is very VERY VERY annoying. You will be stopped, put it in "D" and then go WOT and it just slllllooooowly opens the taps. WTF. STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT.
The brakes, oh my god, they bite great, they slow the car down well, but as soon as you get into the ABS, its like someone has put the car on ice. The brake pressure seems to fall to almost nothing and your stopping distance shoots up all of a sudden. Yes you should not be getting into ABS on a regular basis - but when you have to you need to it to count for something!
The seats are similar to a 50 year old sofa.
The soft ride although good at low speeds is a little too soft for twisty b roads but not a major con, just something to be aware of.

Oh and the interior is crap, the trim is meant to be super cool moder style but it just looks naff to me and feels naff. The dials for the climate are like something of a 1990s ford.
