Anyone on here owned or currently owns a 911?
I'm seriously tempted by a 911 - always wanted one. I'd love a 993 but the other option is a 996. Are they really supercar money to keep running? I'd really like a 993 C4(s) - still love that 4wd thing - or should i be looking at a 2wd?? Any pointers or opinions from people who've actually had to pay the bills etc and live with them as an everyday car? Have you still got it - if not then why did you sell it?

I owned a 993 C2 for two years.
The servicing at my local specialist (Specialist Cars of Malton - Independent Porsche Dealer of the Year) was less expensive that any of my four Beemers.
Before I sold it I replaced all four tyres with kosher Pirelli Nx jobbies for £450.
If you have owned a Scoob a 993 will seem cheap to run. Having said that a plug service is expensive as they have to drop the engine
C4 and Turbo gets more expensive because they are more complex, more to go wrong.
C2 is also very quick, quicker than an unmolested Sti V for example. They are also very easy to drive - 993 is a sports GT car. Turbo is a supercar.
Early 996 cars had lots of engine issues - although they are typically much cheaper than the 993 equivalent.
Most desirable car on the planer, 993 RS in RHD. Less than 30 ever made, great, great drive and hugely expensive
Anyway, I am biased as I am in the process of sourcing a 911 GT3

Thats excellent - thanks - and also very useful as I'm in York too and having a specialist in malton would be very handy. Were there any major stability issues with the C2 or did it still feel very 'planted'? I'd love to get a 993 really - they just look absolutely fantastic and the sound.....

I had a big power STi V - which was too high maintainance and I always wanted a 911.
I really enjoyed the two years I had it, and sold it as my other dream car was a Spec C. I had the Spec C for three years and sold it a month ago.
The 911 is very different to a Subaru - it does not feel as fast, even it is (mind you my target car, the GT3 is seriously fast and feels it!!). As I said above the vanilla 993 is more of a GT sports car rather than a racer for the road a la GT3 or Scoob. The 993 will effortlessly do big speeds and be in total control.
I only ever had my 911 seriously sideways and that was in the snow on a 90 deg right hand junction trying to jump into a gap in traffic. It was fun
My 530d BMW is easier to get sideways even with traction on. In reality, driven like a 911 should be they have enormous amount of grip and if anything are more understeery than oversteery. If you are really tanking on then, yes, the backend can step out and if you are clumsy there will be a spin.
It was a great and easy car to own - just remember that a 993 has a cabin interior that was ergonomically designed in the '70s and it really shows.

I have owned 6 911's (including 3.3 Turbo, 993TT and current 996TT) over many years, interspersed with lots of other makes of quick cars.
My opinion is that with regular servicing, the 911 is a wonderful everyday car.
I have NEVER had a huge bill for a failure of anything (although, like most marques, you hear the usual horror stories. I would recommend getting one.
