Thinking of getting an V8 BMW M5 MY2000
Hello
Im really warming to the idea of getting one of these 400bhp beast in the new year, i mean they have dropped in price so much and can be snapped up for as little as £8000
Anybody had one or experiance of one - any problems?
Cheers

I was all for buying an E39 M5, but settled on the gentlemans version: an Alpina B10 V8.
Damn nearly as fast as an M5 (Alpina are notoriously conservative about power outputs), no Vanos to worry about (or general issues full stop), way more understated, way more exclusive, cheaper insurance and cheaper to buy.
I paid around 8k less than an equivalent mileaged M5, so go buy a Caterham with the change. Which I intend to do

The B10 Alpina is a fantastic car but they are known to suffer with headgasket problem's around the 80 thousand mark. Find one that has had them done or buy one at the right price and have them both replaced with X5 metal head gasket's.
The Alpina would be my choice as most of the parts are standard 540 and available from Germen and Swedish Euro Car Prts etc.

Headgaskets have been known to go, although there are only isolated incidents and more related to faliure of weak coolant pipes (the only real B10 issue) overheating the engine, rather than faliure of the headgasket itself.
Running costs? I've spent £88 on an oil service and £11 on repairs this year. Even MPG isn't bad (20+).
Evo mag have bought one as a long termer: they seem to like it.

thanks for the replys - never considered the B10 will have a look now - Still very surprised bmw still can make a vanos system unreliable after many years of them having them in thier cars like the e36 and having problems too :-(.
This has worried me now

On the v8, its normally the water pump that goes and people fail to see the temp rise and cook it. Which, with most cars, will cause further damage. Apart from that, both fantastic cars (and licence losers) I'd go for the M5 as Alpina's are Auto's. Also, sourcing Alpina parts can be a right pain in the butt.

My mate just bought a 2001 M5 from Munich Legends. Went for a run in it last week. V8 engine sounds incredible. I think the vanos issue was fixed for post 2001 cars.
You can get a 3 year warrenty for it for £1,700 - which is probably well advised!

I've had one for three years and have done 40,000 miles in it. I had a big problem a year or so ago with a misfire which BMW could not find the fault. It cost me 6K over the space of six months to fix the problem. The Vanos was replaced amongst other things and then it was eventualy traced to a broken wire.
Apart from that the car has been fantastic I average 22MPG.

jesus christ - 6k to fix when it was only a broken wire - Hate horror storys like that.
Im worried i thought the M5 was a safer option over a Masserati 3200 but now im scatching my head and wondering what to gamble on.
Ive had my sti type r for a year and a half - come next year ill want to change but to what now i dont know :-(

It was a 60k car when new so expect some big bills if it goes wrong. I Bought the car for £18k with 50000 miles on the clock so the previous owner lost out on all the depreiciation. If you factor in the 6k bill over the three years I have owned the car it's still good value even if the car has droped in value by 8 or 9 k.
They don't go wrong all that often but if a bill for 3 or 4 grand is going to hit you hard I would rethink.

Buy one from a dealer I wouldn't be too worried. I've gone off the idea now.
But these guys have one for 10K.
DC Autos:Used car dealers based in Surrey offering a minimum selection of 65 used cars
Generally come highly rated as one if not the best all rounder cars.
400bhp and loads of torque out of the box with a BMW badge and build for 10K is a serious bargain by anyones standards. How cheap could it ever get!. Think about depreciation as much as service/maintenance costs.
Even with a few big service bills, You could you loose more a year if you went out and bought a new bog standard car, even more flash cars the likes of say a subaru/mitsi etc will loose a potfull of money in a 2-3 years.

Theres no dispute that yore getting a hell of a car for the money but it obvious that its still a 50k car in terms of servicing and if anything goes wrong perhaps - do you agree?

No it was Parks in Hamiton (Near Glasgow). I did not get anywhere with my complaints as it happened over 6 months and they had not kept faulty parts etc. But then I decided not to get a new M5 after that happened so they lost out.
As it has been mentioned I could have bought a new boring car and lost heaps on deprecation. In fact what I have lost on my 911 over 6 months makes my M5 seem really reasonable.
You only live once and lifes to short to be running about in crap cars.

With a car that age you would go with an indy anyway. If something big does go you can source parts from breakers etc now anyway. If you have a good BMW indy near you go for it. I can't remember prices for services itc but an Indy is going to be close on price to getting a Scooby serviced at a main dealer. I think my last bill was £450 for a new set of tyres.
