Audi a4 V6 engine. The oil filter is a paper kind which is held in a canister between the 'V' of the engine.

On changing the oil and the filter - do i fill this cannister with new oil (as you would fill a normal oil filter) or just pour the new oil into the oil filler cap on the crank case

 

You should be able to just fill through the filler cap, wouldn't harm to pop some in the filter housing though.
