Default anyone tuned a turbo diesel?

May tune my e46 330d. Wanted to know if anyone has any experience of this?

will go the route of remap, exhaust and air filter - but looking for a bit more of an improvement than that will give me. what next?

will the intercooler be the next limiting factor? would a quality intercooler increase bhp and torque?

What after that? I want to increase bhp by at least 100bhp and torque 150+

Cheers for your help.

The limiting factor on most diesel remaps isn't the engine, but the clutch & gearbox.

In the VW / Audi 4-pot diesels, +30bhp and +60 ft-lb is easy to achieve but much beyond that you start to need an uprated clutch, solid flywheel etc, and these alone are £500+ fitted, and that's before you even get the map done.

Also, to get the kind of power / torque increases you mention, you may well need an uprated turbo, pipework etc, so an intercooler will be part of the package.

We used to have a DMS tuned 330d at work. The stock clutch was good for 60k with a remap/filter/cat back exhaust. It was bloody quick too, more than enough really. Next step would be brakes/suspension/I/C/injectors/dp/decat etc etc. Lots of money for stage 2.

Expect 30% power/torque for map/filter/cat back.

why is diesel tuning not getting any attention?!?!? i would have thought with everyone getting diesels and the power you can get out of them there would be more specialists out there. even big names such as miltec dont seem to do exhausts for BMW diesels!?!?

Me too - its stonking if a bit smoky at full throttle.

Can you get 3" Evo style exhausts for Diesels too???

I'm giving it a service today and I know that the air filter I'm changing is as big as Mark Hughes' thigh. Is there any point in a different air filter?

Intrigued in all this - as I'm running this car to the ground and then keeping chickens in it!!! A car for life so don't mind spending on it.

I used to have a 150hp Golf GTi TDi , took it to jabbasport for a remap , it was 168hp before starting , and finished up 221hp and 335lb ft torque , it went like stink !
The clutch did start slipping shortly afterwards so I just replaced it with a standard sach's clutch and it was fine for the 2 further years I had it.

your wasting your miney going for anything more than a standard remap (Ive had 2 now both remapped).
The standard gearbox cant cope with any more torque than a remap. A lot of remapped 330ds willl have a noticeable grumbling noise coming from the transmission tunnel at full throttle in 5th and 6th gear. This is the transmission saying please no more im going to break! you definatley wont get 100bhp and 150lb/ft with the standard box (or anywhere near it).
Ive had 2 remaps of my current 330cd and the first had too much torque so i had to get it redone and reduced a bit.
Go speak to a tuner. emaps are the tuner of choice for many 330d owners.

Mark

ps a standard car remapped is surprisingly quick!

Yes I too was v happy with E Maps - good safe and diligent approach. I also asked for 'a bit more please sir' and he duly obliged live via the laptop!

I think I called a company called DMS but they were a bit offish on the phone and very much more expensive so the decision was easy after the E Maps recommendations elsewhere. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, and that 45,000 miles after the re-map.

My friend has a DMS map and i think its slightly better than the emap remap i had (better fuel consumption) but the problem with DMS is its 3 times the price!

Thankyou for that!!

e-maps.co.uk was quite a logical choice... you'd have thought that I could almost have guessed that!?

did my old vectra with the izuzzu 1.7td engine in true ghetto style

modified the fuel pump, and whacked a bleed valve on it

the boost gauge only went up to 1 bar but the needle used to go aprox 1cm ish over the end of the display

it quickly destroyed one turbo so i bought a new vauxhall one from a mate who worked in the parts department, and fitted that back on, it then blew the headgaskets, so i redid them, it then buggered the head and it went pourus, i is fitted a new one, infact it blew the headgaskets 3 times in total, but it bloody shifted so i just kept fixing it pmsl

loved it, 16quid to fill the tank with cherry and was easy beating the petrol engined vectras when i went to a vectra-sport meet down the motorway

we weled up the irmsher sport tailpipe onto the derv system and fitted a mk2 gsi bodykit and i loved it, until it went rusty

just got a superchips remap - not had chance to fully check it out yet but so far its looking good. Pulls away much smoother, no turbo lag at all, just a stronger smoother pull right from low revs.

Dan - what was their approach? How much for how much? Good service/power/cost ratio? Was a 330d yes?

Cheers

Great choice of car.
We do various stages of tune for the 330D depending on what ancillaries you may wish to change. A front mount intercooler and our stage 2 remap is a nice level of tune and will afford you around 475ftlb of torque with zero smoke anywhere in the operating range and guaranteed better mpg to boot but you will likely need a nice fresh clutch and flywheel if you have got a few miles on her.

theres gonna be a big market for diesel tuners soon. so many people are buying them, they are getting as quick as petrol motors, and with so much torque, that is gonna be a big new market. There needs to be more than just remapping available - I dont think most of the people modding scoobies on here would be happy with just a remap....i'd like to be able to upgrade the turbo, exhaust, up pipes, down pipe, manifolds etc on my diesel but there is no info out there at all. search for diesel tuning and all you get is remapping, or plug n play "chips"....if only i was a mechanic myself - theres a right gap in the market!!!!

The market is already here, I have been tuning turbo diesel powered vehicles for over ten years and we now supply 10 evolution Chips for Diesels to every 1 for a petrol, but what you need to remember with further tuning is that the primary benefits of Diesel are:

1) Fuel efficiency
2) Low end torque

And most of the mods you list will ruin both of those. Once you have ruined both of those, you have an engine that by its very nature wont rev very well and as such doesn't suit a larger turbocharger at all so you may as well have bought the Petrol turbo equivalent because you have also wrecked its fuel economy by moving its power band upwards.
