911 Turbo, Dissapointing
Just went for a spin in a 911 Turbo, brand spanker, bit of a let down really, didnt feel much quicker than my Saab !
No, it felt fan F*cking-tastic, utterly apocalyptic performance, what a machine.
He booted it and I thought, hmm, "feels like mine, expected it to feel quicker than this" and then all hell broke loose and no further thoughts were possible, its violent !

I'm off to test a 996 Turbo X50 tomorrow
I know the 997 TT is better/faster/more powerful/refined....etc etc, but I can't afford a 997.
Anyway, I'm going to take my time in choosing the right one 'cos there's loads for sale at the moment.

Was just thinking about it, its the third I have been in, went in a 1980 model when I was a kid and a slightly later one when in Geneva at a wedding, hungover, it was wet and it was the old 2wd one, twitch is not the word, neither was anywhere the one I went in tonight.
Doing this in 2 weeks as well, number 4.

The main difference is the way it handles. 997 is a massive leap forward.
I'm still missing my 996 but as you suggest the 997 has a long way to come down in price in a short period of time before it's worth buying.

I think its the 996 I get to drive briefly on the driving experience thing, will be able to offer an opinion on the relative merits of 911 turbo's
My missus was nonplussed by the whole thing, "its just a car", for that, next time she is going for a ride to experience what "Just a car" feels like, even the most uninterested passenger is unable to ignore acceleration like that and whilst it is entirely superfluous and total overkill its fantastic.
What would you need to notice as being any faster than that ?

lol.....when I read the title of the thread, I was all set to read a story from some Scoob owner who thought his 350bhp classic was every bit as quick as his mate's 911 Turbo that he'd just had a go in.
I was also ready with stuff like "did you start it up" and "did you actually change gear mate".........but then I read a thread which had some sense in it.
911 Turbo is a truly awesome motor.....oh to have the money to buy one
I might still buy a Gallardo though if I had that kind of cash

I remember borrowing a friends 993 Turbo for the weekend a number of years ago. It's still one of the quickest cars I've ever driven and was absolutely ruthless in its urgency! I'd have one tomorrow if I could afford it.

First car I'd buy if my numbers came up is a 997 Turbo. I love these cars.
Still aspire to own a second hand 911 Turbo before I'm 40.

I have a 996 Turbo and now a 997 Turbo on order.
I actually struggled with justifying the cost of a new 997 Turbo over a good used 996 Turbo (i.e. twice the price...is it twice the car?)
I found the 997 better than the 996 in most areas but not in a major way in any area. Performance wise there isn't actually that much in it when on real world roads.
Bottom line is that a good 996 Turbo can be had for £35k and that is a truly stunning car for the money - nothing comes close (190+ mph, 0-60 in less than 4 secs etc) Consider a new 997 Turbo is over £100k and thats the issue I had, and why I kept the 996 for so long.

I test drove a 996 turbo a few years back after hankering for one for years and was convinced I was going to buy it.
After driving it I felt really disappointed. It was fast, but the engine note was horrid and it felt big, heavy and clinical. Obviously I didn't buy it and felt really quite deflated that a car I'd dreamt about for years turned out not to be all that.
I should add though it was a Tiptronic and it was a fairly short test drive

Yes, my missus, myself and the driver did agree it sounds a bit underwhelming as did my nine year old, he compared it to the time he got a go in his mates dads F430 and it didnt sound anywhere near as good, there is no pleasing kids nowadays ! In fact he concluded the same mates mums Merc CLS 55 sounds better as well.

The X50 I had a go in sounded anything but plain.
Part of X50 pack (a £9K option!) includes (I believe) a sports exhaust.
I wouldn't, and won't be, buying a non 996 TT X50, it is an absolutely awesome car.

i was called zip as a lead guitarist in a band years ago.
Then when I joined SN I had a fireblade m/cycle.
This was the 929 model and hence zip929 was born!
I am now a boring 530d Driver! The hardest thing has been learning not to use the indicators!

Nope not part of the X50 pack - indeed Porsche dont make a sports exhaust for the 996 or 997 Turbo's - wish they would !
You have to go 3rd party route, but there are some awesome sounding exhausts available (Milltek, Tubi) which make the car sound much better as it is very quiet as standard - both around £2-2500 fitted.
Running costs will always put people off - my last service was well over £2000 (main dealer)
