creeky steering from my 205

ive asked the same on the 205gti forum, but as more members frequent here than most forums i thought id dip into the wisdom available
i have a 1988 (nov. f-plate) 1.9 gti. its developed a creeking noise in the steering when at low speeds mainly and sometimes higher speeds too (depends how audiable it is - probably doing it all the time).
ive got two suggestions which i think it is.
1. the bearings in the top mounts are fubared and need replacing (shoudnt be much to source either second hand top mounts or just new bearings)
2. the droplinks are fubared. (seen a pair on ebay brand new for £25 so not too bad).
my idea was (when weather is playing ball) was to jack the car up, disconnect the droplinks on either side, drop the car down and try a little dry steering to see if creeking remains. if it does i suppose it rules out droplinks.
has anyone else any suggestions that it could be? ive also noticed slight knocking when braking at low speeds (ie traffic) or jerky acceleration (my terrible throttle control). im assuming this is the shocks themselves?
bit to go through but appreciate the advice. car drives fine, just annoying little things. mot due in a couple weeks too.

Choc, if you want some OEM rubber top mounts and some bearings I have both available, brand new and unused as I used uprated items when I had my Pug.
Bearings cost me £25 and the rubbers approx £15 but you can have the lot for £20 delivered if you want them.
I also have some spare wishbones with poly bushes as well if it turns out to be those - the balljoints can't be renewed on the bones, you have to do the whole things.
Drop links tend to cause a thud sound rather than a creaking noise, I bought some drops off eBay which were OK.
