I take it you mean a second hand RS?

On a smooth road, the RS will kill a R32. The chassis is brilliant. In the wet 1st & 2nd gear in the RS is just wheelspin unless accelerating modestly. Once rolling though grip is huge in the wet.
Bumpy camber ridden roads are what lets the RS down. On these roads, the R32 would win. Overtaking in the RS on bumpy roads can be a nightmare. Nearly sideswiping the car you're overtaking is not fun.

It all depends on the roads you drive on. Lots of back bumpy `B` roads? Take the R32. Mostly smooth fast roads? Take the RS.

Think my head would say the R32, but my heart would say RS, always been a fan of the RS brand

It depends if you want a little bit of a 'wrestle' when pressing on (RS) or you just want to sit back and relax when pressing on (R32).

As for running costs, I wouldn't have thought there's much in it.

For me, I prefer a bit of a challenge.

And the RS is insurance group 16.

Well the R32 is starting to knock on a bit now, and getting a good example is hard work - be prepared to pay a lot! Having said that the engine is very tunable, and it's one of the classic greats.

Oh hang on - you're talking about a poxy Golf? Pah - that's not deserving of the title R32. We should make it a bannable offence to use the term 'R32' to talk about anything except Skyline's unless it's made very clear in the post that the subject is about a VW and not a high-performance vehicle.

Just ordered a new VW Scirocco. For Sept 1st collection.

Approx 31,600 miles
Prodrive PFF7 Alloys
Prodrive Spring kit.

Included in sale - Original 17" alloys with 2.5 month worn RE070 tyres and original springs.

A Bargain. Just don't want to over price it and have it up for sale for ages.

Top Gear track times:

Golf R32 V - 1:30.4

Focus RS - 1:32.2

The current R32 is almost two seconds a lap faster on track ... and there will be an even bigger gap on bumpy normal roads, if wet even more so.

Let's not be fooled, the R32 is a seriously fast hatch; 250hp, big brakes, 4wd when needed, DSG ... actually I think it's the fastest except probably for the new hatch STI.

Top Gear track times for other hatches:

BMW 130i - 1:31.9
Megane RS - 1:32.5
Civic R - 1:32.8
Astra VXR - 1:33.0
Golf R32 IV - 1:33.3
Golf GTI V - 1:33.7
Clio 182 - 1:33.8
Cooper S Works - 1:34.2
Focus ST - 1:34.9
Alfa 147 GTA - 1:35.6
.....

Have a look here

If it were me I'd take the Focus RS. I like the idea that it has bespoke components and is fettled by Ford's motor sport division for driving enthusiasts.

Pricing it to sell. Taking tomorrow afternoon off to get my plate put on retention, which sould take 2-3 weeks. I'll then start advertising it on Autotrader & Pistonheads for £12,500.

Just ordered a new car & can't afford to still have the Subaru come collection. Trade-in value was a joke. Rather get £12,500 for it than have to trade it in becuase it didn't sell as I was asking to much.

I'll see though. The day I advertise it I'll quickly check what others are up for & undercut accordingly.
