They are OK, but thats about it I am afraid. Look nice, usually well specd etc etc but build wise a bit ropey.

If you do decide to look at one, check everything works and I mean everything, if it has a switch or button for it try it out at least twice.

Check the exhaust for corrosion / blowing. Gear box linkeage, 147's are prone to the gear box linkeage failing, if it feels like your stirring porridge you are looking at between £100 and £150 to have it sorted.

Make sure it's got full alfa or specialist service history and has had cam belt, tensioners etc etc all done.

Other than that great cars ;-)

GB

p.s. wife had one for about 6 months and just could not get on with it.

Great car if maybe a bit under powered. However I had a 156 v6 at the time. Fuel ecconomy is high 30's - low forties on a run. Low thirties if you thrash it. My wife had one for 3 years and loved it - as she said, its the first 'proper' car she's owned.

Had the gearbox thing. Also had the water pump fail (due the cambelt anyway).

Lots of toys with the Lusso model - all of which worked.

Very comfortable driving positions for both of us - I'm 6'2" and she is 5' 5".

With the 15" wheels it was very nimble, lovely handling.

Servicing isn't too bad, the spark plug change can be a bit frightening, there's eight of them.

Check out Alfa owners forum Alfa Romeo Forum - Alfa Romeo Club for dedicated owners

Biggest thing to watch out for is 36k or 3 year cambelt service. If it hasn't been done knock £400 off the asking price.

Despite what bigvern reported, I have read that even the 1.6's struggle to do 30mpg, top twenties average maybe 33-35 on a run.

Check out the forum.

Put a deposit down on a 1.6tspark Lusso

Getting it delivered down to me on Monday. I have to say if the salesman was possiblely the nicest guy i have ever dealt with and (fingered crossed this car is not a lemon) i would defo buy from him again. Excellent service and knowledge!
