My wife has joined the Fiat 500 owners club again, we sold her last 500 about 8 years ago and now she wants another one, trouble is they have increased in price quite a lot !
We were thinking 3 or 4 grand but it seems decent ones are between 5 and 7 grand, she doesn't want to spend to much but my thinking is that if we buy the right one it will either stay the same or go up, worst case is you lose a few quid.
Anyway, I did like the 500 but think they are too small and weedy for modern roads, especially given their crash worthiness, so I am trying to tempt her with something a bit bigger and more practical, possibly a bit cheaper, I am after suggestions, it has to be pre 1973 to get the free tax, cute and be small for parking, so no big old Jags. It will be a third car, not replacing proper ones, will be used for occasional school runs, shopping, stand in when the other two are being serviced, 7 mile commute for me when feeling eccentric.
I am thinking
Moggy 1000
Ford Anglia 100E
Austin A40 Farina
Dont want a "project" that involves large scale removal of Iron Oxide, dont mind some jobs but really I just want something that will take perhaps a 1275 Metro MG engine and some nice Minilites or wide steelies for that 60's rally look, needs to be MOT'd.
No Beetles, nothing older than late fifties, i.e. no cable brakes, 6 volt electrics etc, she doesnt want a sportscar, i.e. no Midgets, MG's or Frogeyes.
So, anyone know of anything, want to avoid the 500 if possible !

She isn't into Mini's and spotted the Hornet/Elf as being one, I showed her a Chamois and she didnt like that, then I relaised that I dont either !
I was quite heartened at her response to the 100E and 105E Anglia, however apparently only the Fiat 500 does it for her, she had me ringing a dealer in the Isle of Man who has one and is ready to tear up to Leeds to look at one.
kind of hoping it will pass, five grand (some are more) is a lot for something so ancient and tiny, that kind of money gets you into Snorty MK2 Escort, Minty Mk1 Capri and even tidy 944 Turbo land.

Would love a Capri but it doesnt float her boat at all, thats for me when I can get one.
I mentioned the 1100 and the thrash appeal but it fell of deaf ears.
We bid on one last night but its didnt meet its reserve, we won the bid but the final figure was 800 quid less than our bid so I guess that you have to have someone else bid against you to bump it past the reserve ?
Prices are getting daft.

We bid on one and didn't get it, we have emailed the seller and not had a response, just going to bide our time and wait for the right one to appear.
That Anglia is lovely, my idea of a useful classic, perhaps with a nicely done Crossflow and suspension work or a Zetec and I have seen a Cossie engined one which I would expect is a handful !

Lancia Fulvia gets my vote, had one for a short time. Dog leg 1st, V4 engine, disc brakes all round and great to look at with a rally heritage.
Classic Lancia Fulvia 1.3 coupe on eBay, also, Lancia, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Jun-08 12:46:14 BST)

We were going to do our bedroom but have just deceided to move it around and repaint so have saved the cost of new units which was going to be three grand, nothing else needs doing at the moment.
Otherwise, it either sits in the bank earning about 4 percent, alternatively she can scratch the Fiat 500 itch (again, last time we sold it cos the kids were young), hopefully if we buy the right one it wont cost too much in repairs and servicing, it has zero rate road tax and the insurance is very little, MOT 40 quid a year.
Basically if you get a good one and look after it, it shouldnt devalue, they have gone up a lot since we had the last one so anyone who bought one then would have made money on it and had the fun (takes all sorts) and when you come to sell it hopefully you get your money back, possibly a bit more, ok prices may crash and they drop back but then again look at the way the banks have been wobbling recently. Ok, I am never going to convince anybody that any kind of Fiat is a good investment but there are worse. My theory is that we buy one thats had all the work done, I do not want to spend time welding aged Fiats, thats they key, let someone else spend the time and money as you never get it back on renovation work.
Its funny, people pay money for all sorts of things, paintings, watches, jewellry, property, gold, classic cars, stamps, coins and god knows what, anything rare/scarce does eventually go up in value, this is how the rich get richer, they key thing is having money that can be sidelined, not needing it for something else, having an asset sat there for ten years and then guess what, when you come to sell it, its gone up, ker-ching. Buying day to day stuff is an object lesson in binning money, Big Tellies, clothes, furnishings, day to day cars, games consoles etc is never a way to retain value, instant depreciation, short term obsolecence, medium term worthless.
So, worst case is, we lose four grand, I suspect my Saab has done that since October last year based on it getting older and the VED/Petrol hikes or not far off. Best case, buy one (500 that is) at four, run it for 3 years and sell it for 5 ?
