My friend's just got rid of her 2.5(?) petrol Sport.
She had no particular problems with it in the 12 months she had it but it just left her very underwhelmed.
Did nothing bad (apart from the MPG) or particularly good, just a bit....well.....dull.

One car which never got a decent road test write up by any magazine - and I read virtaully all of them. Too expensive, utterly appalling offroad and not that much smaller than the X5. Basically there is no reason to buy one of these when the 3 series estate and the X5 are available. Tell the Mrs she doesn't need a bloody 4x4 to totter around town and then go and buy a proper car.

As Blueblaster says above.

My mate traded hers in for an Audi A6 Allroad 3.0Tdi estate

Very nice, too

No redeaming features.. Always seems like x3 drivers couldn't afford the x5? Similar size but the x5 is better!

Personally though it need s a land rover badge for me before i consider it an off roader

2.0D m sport is not bad with 177bhp lump in though drivers get nothing like the claimed MPG and earlier cars suffered reliability issues.

In reality X3 is a much better car now after mid life revamp than people give it credit for and than it was at launch when it got panned. However its too late as its got a bad reputation and has already been condemned by the majority....

Mrs Wish has one. Its been a brilliant car, excellent fuel consumption (35mpg around town) Its just a year old and we have been looking at changing it, but it always comes back to another X3 - so may hang on to this a little longer.
She use to have a C220 Merc Estate, and this is a better car by miles.

GO FOR IT !

After driving a 4x4 for a number of years now I really enjoy the higher driving position and doubt I will go back to a saloon. This is still a growing market with almost every producer trying to enter the market.

Would avoid the X3 though.

Talking any other suggestions then pls ????

ok so if its really that bad what else do u suggest - we'll be chopping in the Z4 against it so we'l get a good deal !!!! and as a few have said the newer ones are much improved on the originals !!!

the X5 is about 15K more - if i was to spend that it would RR Sport all the way !!

what model is that Wish - ( u helped me in the past while back !!)

Cheers !

Wife has had her X3 2.0d sport since (new) 2005. Loves it, its been great, quite economical for what it is, and it has never missed a beat.

X3 size suggest the Honda CRV is probably class leader - followed by Rav4.
New Mitsibushi Outlander looks good and the Hyundai's are starting to look interesting with their long warranties.
I've a new shape X5 and think the proportions look good - there's something not quite right with the X3's looks though?

First gen cars were not highly rated by the mags, however the current model is.

If its spending most of its life on road, then who cares if its not so good off?

I just think they look tiny and a bit ghey compared to the X5's---- bit like why didn't you just buy the nice proper sized one to begin with.

then again I can't see the point of these soft roaders anyway.

if you had to have one, life or death and it had to be that size- the Rav4 look a lot lot better.

If you wana save yourself a bit of ££'s I would consider the Honda CRV EX (with the 19" magnesium type alloys )

Does nothing a 3 series touring can't better

Well, except for sakes of vanity.

Same with the X5 vs 5 series touring imo.

Quite true

BMW 320d Touring does 46mpg in town & 67mpg on motorway!

& Better looking than that (but pretty much same engine & efficency) is the Alpina D3 Touring:

Good effort Pete, but that sounds more like the petrol engined model to me. I think a diesel would be more:

eheheehehehehehehehe - chhh--chhh - chuu.... chugg, chuggg, chuggg, chugger, chugg, chugg, chugger, chunk, chuggggggggggggg, chunk, chuggggggggggggggggg, chunk chuggggggggggggg etc.

I think that's how Rory Bremner would spell it anway.

Never quite understood why anyone would buy an X3, if you need something with room buy an estate or MPV, if you want a BMW buy a 3 series, and if you want a 4x4 buy a real one.

You clearly dont understand the car market and the popularity of the small soft roader 4x4.
