Default Which one for the commute car?

Say I had 2k to spend on a car to get me to work and back [60 miles a day], what do you reckon to these 2?

Vauxhall : Vauxhall Astra SXI 1.8 16v 3 Door

Volkswagen : 1995 2.0 8v Golf GTI

Now remember, performance isn't the most important thing but I wouldn't want a 1L Fiesta or something like that, as I don't fit in cars that small. So I gotta think about mpg [yuck yuck yuck], comfort for the motorway trip to work and reliability? Or do I go the whole hog and get something that runs on the fuel of satan Volkswagen Volkswagen : MK 3. GOLF TDI..66k fsh

Assuming your 60 miles a day is work and back over a year thats over 15,000.

I would say diesel is probably better and get something like a 306 diesel. Cheaper than the golf, engine just as good and equally as good on MPG.

I certainly wouldn't bother buying a GTI, SXI or the like as you'll pay more for the car, insurance and fuel.

Yeah the non-turbo Peugeot are slow as hell. The D-Turbo's, and HDi's are great motors though!

Do you have another car and if so what is it? If you're only doing 15,000 miles a year then when you add together the purchase price, road tax, insurance and maintenance you'll probably find it will be cheaper just to run your current car. If this is going to be your only car then I reckon a well cared for MK3 Golf diesel would be a good place to start. Don't go for any high performance car as the potential for big bills at this purchase price is very high indeed.

I'm thinking about the future really [my current car in a 16v Mk2 Golf], when I get either an EVO, Scooby, R33 GTR or 350Z [the maybe cars that have made my list]. I wouldn't wanna use any of these for the daily commute, so I need a second cheap car that does all the boring stuff!

you want something run of the mill mate so something like a vectra/mondeo/focus etc.

They will be cheap to run and insure and you will have plenty of choice for your cash

I've just bought an old Merc 190e,and to be honest,i love it,and best of all,it was cheap for the condition it's in and the mileage it's done....................and virtually a Full Merc Service History to boot
