Emissions light comes on when cold!
Not my car but a work colleague, it's a Sept 05 BMW 330ci.
When driving off in the mornings a yellow/orange emission light comes on and stays on for the first half a mile.
It's been into BMW and they said it hasn't been recorded on the ECU fault recorder.
Anyone with some experance able to shed some light. (Cats?)
Thanks
Adam

emissions light? never heard of that before, but i suppose it was only a matter of time!
could be something to do with the difference in efficiency between a cold and warm engine? ie, emissions not in "global meltdown" mode after half a mile perhaps?

'Emmision Lights' are just the 'Engine Management Lights' of old, more 'Green' tosh!
The Lambda sensors may be worth checking...the heating element may not be working correctly so they won't record an accurate reading till up to temperature, after half a mile or so for example. I'd say let the garage have to car ovenight and get it plugged into the computer on start up and watch the live readings.

The BMW 6pots, especially the 3.0 do missfire quite a bit when cold - especially if they aren't opened up regulary and given a good run, as the spark plugs often get oil fouled causing poor running when cold (DMS will detect missfire and stuggle to adjust ignition fuel trim and show fault light).
New set of spark plugs would be my first port of call, NGK - and don't pay more than £35 for a set of six.

Thanks guys.
He's got the car going in next week and it's in BMW's b+b for the night.
They'll be able to test then with a cold engine. Mike says thanks for your help and he'll tell the Stealer's that Scoobynet techs say it could be the above (they'll love that )
Thanks again
