Default Ideal motorway car?

Having to do regular runs up north at the moment, so I'm in the market for a dead-quiet comfy sofa on wheels. Fuel economy isn't the hightest priority.

Lexus LS400? Jag S-type?

Has to be freakily quiet - I find road noise quite draining after a while.

Bmw E38 750IL, can get almost 30 mpg and is wisper quiet. The 5.4 ltr V12 was rewarded engine of the year when first launched and has loads of buttons to press. Just make sure everything works, as they are getting on a bit now. Also it aint no slouch for the size of it, 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and get above 100 mph and not many unmodified impreza's etc can stay with it to 155 mph.

Here is one in silver with black interior:
BMW 750I L AUTO SILVER 5.4L V12 STUNNING CAR £100K NEW on eBay, also, BMW, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 05-Mar-08 15:36:18 GMT)

it has done 125K miles and was owned by the chairman of Iceland more than likely got FSH check that though through the dealers or specialist etc. Also they got another 750 plus two Mercedes and a 3.0 ltr S Type Jag.

This is a nice colour combination:

1996 BMW 750 on eBay, also, BMW, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 10-Feb-08 20:46:08 GMT)

This one has only done 70K miles and was made and registered in early 96. Also this was parked on the Bmw stands. A photographer was employed then and was his car and is finding some pics of it. Again ask about service history.

This is an individual in green with cream leather etc:

1998 'R' BMW 750iL 'Individual' on eBay, also, BMW, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 29-Feb-08 18:03:20 GMT)

This has FBMWSH and has done 80k miles.

30 MPG from a V12 BMW, you are perhaps having a laugh there, a mate has had a couple of them and said double figures was an acheivement around town and almost saw 20 mpg one day and got excited, he did say they were wonderful though.

The Volvo is good as mentioned, I suspec the new Mondeo is a brilliant Motoway car as well.

Well my dad owns one and he can get 27 - 30 mpg at 90 mph because the engine is doing just over 2,500 rpm. Along motorways that is. Sorry then engine was awarded international engine of the year in 1999.

My old '88 W124 250TD was almost silent at normal motorway speeds and that was a diesel estate

The saloons are quieter still

Omega.

Cheap and comfy. Get the 2.5 diesel and you're laughing. I'm watching out for a cheap old one locally myself.

Vote for volvo again,

I had an S60, heated leather, 13 speaker surround sound stereo which is superb.

Voted the most comfortable cabin in some award last year. Like the previous post says, don't laugh - try one. I never got out from a journey feeling tired, it was superb and still missed....

Forgot to mention my old man's saab 9-5, nearly on par but stereo no where near as good!

I have a chipped one its not magificently fast, still pulls 40mpg at around 75-80mph (auto is the one to get over the manual gearbox, book says 7.5k mile service intervals but engine starts to tell you at about 6k its getting ready for that oil change!)
You get lots for your money and the 2.5TD just goes on and on.
Top of the range elite has pretty much everything, very comfy on long runs, very quiet, even with the 6cyl engine under the bonnet.
Service history is a bit of a must, they run chains so no cambelt change required but you need to change the power steering and aux belts, parts are cheap considering, and plenty of room in them.

Tony

PS, there is no service interval on the gearbox (auto) but its recommended atleast every 60k to change the oil, been told by a speciallist (owned 2 omega auto's) that they last an easy 190k if not longer when looked after

Ive got a Subaru Forester Turbo-S for the motorway

Leather heated seats and mirrors. Small Turbo - Pulls like a V8 from 1500rpm.
Loads of room for the football runs.

But, crap mileage.

I just bought a 53 plate VW Passat TDI (PD130 with a 6 speed box) as my motorway muncher.

I can't comment on it yet as I'm picking it up next week, but on paper it looks pretty good. Sounds a bit noisy but that's diesels I guess.

I've been smoking around in my bro inlaws A8 4.2quattro (2001) for the past week, very relaxed as an m'way cruiser, the steering was a bit vague at speed and i felt myself floating about the lane somewhat, its ok once you get used to it, had a good turn of speed at er motorways speeds as well Felt so much more relaxed at the end of my journeys compared to the Scooby

The ride in most Audi's is too firm for real motorway cruising. Havent been in an audi that dispells this for true comfort.
Also - to previous posts, it must be a BIG car. The step up from 3series size to 5 or 7 series is MAJOR in terms of real overall comfort. The small car is always noisier and more jittery relative to it's bigger brother.

Big S-Classes are generally excellent...

I have an XC70 which has much more "wafty" suspension than the V. 500 miles from Suffolk to Donegal in 10 hours & still fresh. Every day up and down the M11 and likewise. Reason I got it really (compared it to an Audi!).
