Great car. I still remember the journalist who blew the engine by putting it into first at ninety!

BTW, much as they are gorgeous supercars, I think they suffer from 80s problem in that they are HUUUGE. It would be like taxiing an aircraft up and down country lanes

Apparently they also had wooden brakes that were nowhere near the performance needed for a car like that.

that is my favorite car ever. i have loved it since i was young (only 19 now but still) never ever seen one on the road. i saw one at the MPH show recently. couldn't believe it. i will buy one when im rich one day and as for the previous comment, yes the brakes are sh*t but if you can buy one of these cars then you can afford to upgrade the brakes

Very cool.

I remember when they were first released, awesome! I even had the XJ220computer game on my old Amiga!

I also remember Clarkson nailing it on a track and the acceleration caused the old "pull-out" style head unit to fly out of the dash!

They didn't sell well though did they? My local Jag garage in Brentwood had a silver one in for over a year. It was interesting to watch the price drop. IIRC it started off at £425k list and ended up at £175k. Bargain!

Here is a video clip of Top gear having a drag race with a Zonda in an XJ220.

I wonder which one won?

It may not have had the V12 in it (like the prototype at the NEC show recently) or the 4wd system that was promised when launched. But it is still a worthy icon and very fast even by today's standards. I also read somewhere that if Ferrari had designed the Metro 6R4 unit that went into this car, it would be hailed as one of their greatest engines ever. Not bad for a chopped Rover V8, designed pretty much as a pet project. British engineers don't always get the credit they deserve.

The Jag XJ220 doesn't use the same V64V engine as the 6R4. It may have been a development, of a development, of the Metro engine, but the finished article was actually quite different.

very nice, always a nice to see one on the road. The last one I saw was at Oulton Park parked up at a BTCC meeting maybe 15 years ago.
