Default Abandoned DB7

My parents moved to a new block of apartments about a year ago, and in the parking bay next to theirs is a DB7 on a private plate, unmarked bodywork but it has NEVER moved in that year.

The steering wheel is off, and the instrument panel has been part-removed, with wiring hanging out all over. Parents don't know who's car it is, and have never seen anyone tinkering with it.

Otherwise it looks in good nick .... wonder what could be wrong with it?

Maybe someone bought it and then went overseas. Sold some bits to a friend?

Try to find out if someone owns it. I think theres some law that if you find an abandoned car you can register it in your name. Sounds like bollox but I've seen other people mention this.

Tis true.

You can try to register it, the DVLA will write to the registered keeper, if they don't respond within 14 days the vehicle becomes your property.

Probably a trip down to the Police Station would be in order first as it sounds like its a stolen car been dumped with that sort of interior damage.

Technically you become the registered keeper. Remember it says on the V5 the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner (as in unpaid finance cases etc)

So you wait until your rich mate with his 911 Turbo is about to go on holiday for two weeks. Phone or write to DVLA and by the time he get's back his car's yours.... That sounds like a plan.

In theory, yes, in practice they'll probably find your rotting corpse in a shallow grave when your mate gets back from his hols

Owner could be residing at her majesty's pleasure for dealing.

Not sure about the dash. Bit of a primitive way of trying to clock it? Or is something hidden behind dashes? (no hangman jokes please)

Not only are you only the reg keeper of said car (and not the owner), you also become liable for any parking tickets or fines that are unpaid on the vehicle in the past!

One of the 205 forum lads did this to an abandoned Alfa, and IIRC the owner was in prison for something or other, and ended up wanting the car back - it ended OK I think, but could have been worse.

Sound dodgy to me. Wouldn't want to risk messing with some gangsta owner.

The better advice is not to get involved with the owner.

You can write to the DVLA and get the details for a fee (£35 IIRC). Just tell them it's parked opn your property and you need to trace the RK.

isn't the immobiliser connected to the instrument cluster?

i know some cars when having clocks changed (for low mileage clocks) need the immobiliser recoding to the new clocks

Why not contact your "local" Bentley dealer and ask if its been serviced recently. Say you've been offered it at a very low price and want to check the creditability of the seller and the car.

Might be worth a try

Not true at all. I work at a VW main dealer and had to help someone out with this exact thing (abandoned scirrocco and he wanted it for parts)

You are only responsible for tickets etc from the date you become the registered keeper. Thats the whole point of registering a car, so they know who to send a ticket too!!!

I'm getting curious now

Looked this car up on Vehicle Licensing and it's still taxed (or SORN'd) BUT the details say the car should be black, and it is actually Racing Green metallic ...

Go to Snazy's thread on the Cougar near him, the database is apparently full of errors.

Just going off what happened to the reg car on the 205 forum - IIRC he had to pay some fines from before he had registered the car.

Could be wrong though.

I nearly met my maker as a passenger in an early DB7, when the owner fishtailed off a country road bend into a 6 foot deep ditch at 55mph. It landed on its side and we were both OK (despite the airbags not working). His insurers wrote it off but he bought it back to get it repaired. I think that was black or very dark blue prior to the shunt.

Funny thing was my brother and my girlfriend (now wife) were following directly behind us in his Renault GTA Turbo: they wondered why we had suddenly forked off left. His car got round the bend no problem. They were rather upset to say the least to find us in the ditch.

There's a thread on passionford where someone 'claimed' an escort cosworth the very same way.

I personally don't like the idea of doing this and there could be a genuine reason why some cars are left alone for a while.

Was he the same guy that posts on migweb?iirc he got it changed into his name having sat there for a few years and the day he got it changed over it got knicked by joy riders. The police found it with some light damage so he got it back, don't know what else happened though. Thing I couldn't understand is if it had sat for so long how the hell did anyone manage to nick it?

It's still there, but a DVLA check showed it's tax (or SORN) is still valid, so it's unlikely to have been dumped ...

Weirdly, there is an abandoned DB7 in my apartments car park too. Not quite dismantled as yours is but it has sat their for 9 months. Nice maroon colour, very dusty and 2 flat tyres. Otherwise it is fine. There are no plates on it at all.

There is also a DB9 with Manx plates which hasn't moved for about 3 months, wondering if I can claim them both!
