Default BMW 4.4 V8 2001

Just put down the deposit on a X5 and im picking it up on Saturday.

Blue fully loaded (i.e, sat nav, tv's in head rest, DVD player, games console, traffic master (£1.2k extra!) every button under the sun on the center console) with the 20inch 4.6 wheels on it

Heard of the gearbox going on these car's but the dealer i am buying it from has the paper work for the new box fitted just shy of £4K!!!!

What do people think of these car's on here? Been over to the BMW sites and they love them but what about you guys?

Still have my scooby what was brought for track days (only made it to one as the gearbox went) New one going in today.

Mmm cool car. 2001, is it the facelift ?? with the halo eyes ? 4.4, nice engine, juicey though.

Sounds like it's been owned by some bling merchant before with those 20s and the AV kit. The 4.4 aint that quick and eats fuel, ripe for an LPG conversion.

The daddy is the 4.6 with a lot more power.

Obviously but I was talking about within his price reach otherwise I'd have said Porsche Cayenne Turbo is the daddy forget the X5.
A couple of grand more will see him into a 4.6 which is a quick car, gonna cost him 10 more at least into a 4.8.

Enjoy. I have a 54 reg X5 3.0D. The Halo eyes came in on the 04/54 reg. Great car but I only get 21mpg around town and thats the D. Someone up the road has the 4.4 and gets 13mpg around town

Must say, they have really grown on me, the image problem seems to have subsided a bit and taken over by the RR sport and Cayenne, a good looking vehicle really.

£1.02 per litre at 13 mpg, you are very brave !

Get that LPG installed ASAP.

2000 - 2004 the engines were 3.0, 3.0d, 4.4 and 4.6is
2004 - 2007 the 4.6is was replaced with 4.8is and the deisel engine was updated.
2007 - onwards is the new shape X5, engine range is 3.0d, 3.0sd, 3.0si and 4.8is.

From a dealer POV they're pretty much bullet proof, not a lot that really goes wrong. Like all BMWs, they go through brakes and oil like theres no tomorrow so beware about that. Be careful with the wheels and body panels (£540 + vat for a front bumper) they're not cheap by any means!

At the moment, the rear lights are on an international Backorder as the supplier to BMW went bust.

Theres a conversion on the rear wiper arm. Basically replaces the old version with the new one. Nothing major.

Front indicator bulbs are a pain in the a*se to change, dealers take the headlight out to replace them, though if you have small enough hands you can do it without.

Thanks for your thoughts guy's

As said iv done some reading on the bmw sites and between the 4.4 and 4.6 is 20bhp, not worth the extry money! Also most of them over there say they get 20mpg from the 4.4, Not much less then my scooby

The 20inch wheels on it are BMW so not too blingy

LPG is not worth the money with the sort of driving ill be doing in the car what will be 2-3 times a week no more the 100 miles a week.

Cant wait till saturday! The car i just sold was an audi TT and im so looking forward to been able to go places with more then just one other person in the car

I'm sure you will but just realise it's 100% a road car. On standard wheels and tyres you have a slim chance of getting off wet grass at best.
With 20" rims stick to tarmac only or FWD hatchbacks will embarrass you.

The X5 is a good road car but the anti 4X4 brigade will hate you, the proper off roaders will hate you and the BMW haters will hate you. If you can stand all that then you should enjoy it.

I've had a 325, M3 (e46) and currently have a 530D and they've never used a drop (unlike my scooby which loved a pint or two). Are the v8's fond of the black stuff?

Its a common thing on all BMWs, there are a few lucky people who get the few cars that don't use much or any oil but I have to say from an aftersales point of view we sell loads of it regularly...

A 2001 4.4 is going to be the lower output 290bhp v the 4.6 with 347bhp. There were two versions of the 4.4 the older unit 2002 and before with less power and the later 4.4 with 315bhp.

According to EVO magazine the difference was likened to that between a pussycat (the old 4.4) and a tiger. There is well over a second in 0-60 times between the lower power 4.4 and the 4.6.

That doesn't mean the old 4.4 isn't adequate however but the later 4.4 or better yet 4.6 are the ones to go for as they all have similar fuel 'economy'.

They also cost loads more, Use more petrol, and you pay a higer insurance for them and all for a second faster 0-60

When it's your money paying for it get the later car's as you say.

It's not a race car, That's what the Scooby is for

They cost a couple of grand more than a good 4.4 for sure, insurance quotes for me were more or less the same and the second to 60 doesn't tell the full story. The evo comments "from a pussycat to a tiger' do. Fuel economy is actually a bit better in the 4.6 because you don't have to thrash it to get it to move.

Maybe you would have been better off with a 3.0i?

Here's my x-X5. Sold earlier this year. 2001 4.4 V8, fully loaded, just like yours






For what it is, it was quick enough. I am sure the 4.6 was quicker and the 4.8 even quicker. But I didn't buy to drag race, it had ample grunt for day to day driving.

Recently changed to this:



It's a 3l Diesel S-Line so not nearly as quick as the X5, but again quick enough for the school run.

Drove most other 4x4 of a similar ilk before choosing the Q7, it was the only one that came near the all round quality of the X5. I would have had another X5, but when I change cars I like to change cars, not buy a slightly newer verison of the same thing.

Interesed to know what you paid for yours, I sold mine for 15k with just under 60k miles, FSH etc....

Lovely car you have there mate! Way out of what i could afford! But would love to have one

Don't belive everything u read in a book! Have u driven both yourself? If i done what books say i would never of spent my money on an X5 as i read top gear and Mr Clarkson HATES them! Also i do not have a couple extra grand like u say for a car that is gonna cost me more to insure and for not much more anything (im paying for this cash, no loans here)

Last of are you saying i will need to trash a 4.4 V8 to get it to move

I can not see that myself

Yeah them books sure do say some funny things thats why I never trust what I read in em and just stick to believing what I see on TV.
Anyway getting back to the X5, I had the 3.0D remapped first which I chose over the 4.4 in back to back test drives. I tried the 3.0i as well which wasn't much more sluggish than the old low power 4.4. Most likely cos it was manual instead of a slushbox.
After the diesel I went for a 4.6i sport which was a fair bit quicker than the diesel and I was all set to go for a LPG conversion when I got the chance to buy a Toureg V10 diesel with all the toys. Remapped it feels far quicker than the X5 ever did and still does 30 on a run and low 20s round town. Well over 350bhp and 800nm torque is just the job in a big heavy SUV.
You'll find you need to give the 4.4 a bit of a thrashing if you really want it to move as fast as say, a 2.0 diesel repmobile. As a result I reckon the 4.4 has worse fuel economy than the 4.6 in normal driving.
Anyway enjoy your car it's pretty good for the price of a supermini when you think about it.

I'd want proper wheels with some decent M&S tyres - more comfortable and does the job in snow or fields without losing too much on the road. Enjoy!

I used to get 5-6 mpg out of my original Range Rover - but that was with 4 up plus a trailer with a big vintage car on [all coming in at a bit over 4 tonnes!] cruising on the motorway at 75mph!

It is, indeed, a common problem but easily sorted!

I fixed the heavy oil consumption on my 330i by thrashing the living daylights out of it. It went from 1 litre per 1,000 miles to half a litre between oil changes but I stuck to changing the oil at 7- 8,000 miles not the 15,000 that the service lights will give you.

And my cars [had 3] all do 150K with no engine problems before I sell them.

If you get a model with a Sunroof check the drain plugs at the top of the tailgate work. Mine got blocked and the water runs into the boot floor where all the electrics are. Mine had a £15k repair bill for a 97p part sticking !!!!
