Ford Focus 1.8 16 V zetec 99

Why would my dials stop reading & my trip meter fail only to leave dashes only within the mileage read out,plus the anti skid light stays iluminated, but the tacho still reads ok....
This has happened twice lately, and there is a lack in performance when this happens...though not to much of a loss in power.
After I stop and turn off and on, everything goes back to normal...
Is this a safe guard of some sort, built into the fords electronics

This happened on my 98 focus 1.8 ghia and it was the sender unit in the gearbox. if memory serves i think it was about 30.00-40.00 quid for the sender and a little bit of a struggle under the car to remove and refit.

battery is new........the car goes really well......and is right on the nail as regards the performance figures mpg etc....not bad for 125k and still sounds like new......
mmmmm just gonna wait till it fails at sometime, all signs are that the motor is working well...bar this blip....which has only happened twice over the last month....
