Which grade of oil should I use on a 1993 MK III Golf GTI 16v???

Book says 15/40 Ian but i always used to put 10/40 in mine without a problem

 

Dont use any thin Synthetics, they dont like it, lubricates well but the tappets will rattle and it might start using oil. I used to use Magnatec or just plain old Castrol GTX in my 8 valve which is a similar engine. The dont get hot enough to need synth, no turbo.
