Tony, you just had a fetish for setting fire to yours
DaOne, as the main man says, RTOC - The Renault Turbo Owners Club is the place to go. You'll save your membership fee at least 187 times over in the first year. We also have various 1/4 mile and track day events all over the country/Europe that everyone's welcome to attend.

Mate used to have one in the early 90's, it ran a hybrid turbo and a few other bits for around 200bhp.
Wiring for the little fan the cooled the carb melted and set fire to the engine bay.
Cheers

They are old and made by Renault so be ready for it breaking down ever 2 or 3 miles but then if you only use it for 1/4 miles at a time you should manage about 8 before it goes t*ts up. Then again you will be revving the engine doing this so it will probably blow up half way down the first run
On a serious note they were pretty legendary in their day but I would only have run one with a warranty. That said if just for fun don't see why not

At one point they were THE car stolen to joy ride in. Quickly eclipsed by the Fiesta RS Turbo.
One I saw... <wince> was described as excellent condition but the price was a tad low, £1K below list. It was... Smashed, grabbed, littered with small pieces of steering shroud plastic and had 7 owners. - For a 2-3 year old car! Best of all was the immaculate brass plate on dash "Thank-you for not smoking".
On the plus side of things. They aren't very sophisticated, can you say "carburettor". They don't run much boost as standard. Prima managed to shoe-horn a 1.7 litre engine in and retain the turbo installation.

Quick things. Run out of puff after 115, carb lets them down to a degree but the famous words that R5 owners utter are "look after them and they'll look after you"

Had one want to race me on the A12 when i had my CTR, he sat on my **** at about 85 MPH then after i pulled into lane one, he shot off like a bat out of hell.
5-6 Miles later he was on the hard shoulder with plumes of smoke pouring out of his bonnet!!
Mind you his baseball cap was still on straight when i went past.

Mate had one a good ten years ago. In a year it scoffed four headgaskets and then someone tried to nick it. Got shut because he needed a car he could at least use occasionally.
Fun but i would have thought tempramental by this day and age! Still as a track car probably as good as anything else out there.

Agreed with the above, keep it serviced and looked after and it shouldnt go wrong. the key really is keeping the fueling set up correctly and watch the cooling and you wont have a problem with headgaskets, no different to any other car really apart from the fact its 20x more fun than any other car

had one for a few months,it was quite rapid for what it was. the funny thing was tho how loads of people would move over to let you past, happened all the time in the little r5.
it was crap on fuel and big on smiles.

As stated already, go join rtoc and you'll save your money ten times over in no time at all. There's people on there all over the country who'll gladly help fellow members out with there cars for a few beer tokens

It wasn't black was it??? It sounds like one of mine.
I had two of the things. If you know what to do, some good gains will be made. If you don't know what you are doing you can pay top dollar for cheap parts.
The 1.7 Engine mentioned earlier, was the 440 Volvo Turbo lump. Which donated its clutch as a GpN part!!
Go on the forum and see if you can contact Bruce, I think he is still the club chairman.

owned one of these 17 years ago.a pearl white 86 and it was my first car ......many a good memory but a few bad one's as well.in short like above you will have a love hate realationship for sure but all in all brillant craic.
i had mine for around 3 years or so and the most costly problem was needing a gearbox.but you were constantly needing small jobs done though i was 17 at the time and i don't think the engine cooled down once.80'000 miles in 3 years was and still would be a lot for me.
just make sure when you need wheel bearings and clutch cables buy genuine parts.

i had 2, first one was a cracker the only thing that let go was the turbo, paid a few g's for that one too on a h reg.
then i found this-
couple of hundred quid, hybrid turbo, paddle clutch, bit of boost this was a propper bone shaker. It blew the head gasket so i changed it along with new stem seals then sold it to a mate he then busted the turbo and the bottom end. he got a replacement engine and turbo then sold it on. the logbook must of had 15+ owners on it lol. the car had been looked after in its earlier days but when it got to me it had enough.
you get what you pay for with these motors
