Default Shoguns / Pajero's

Anyone had one ?

Looking at swapping the current car for a Shogun as it has 7 seats, and need a 7 seater now, prefer to have something like that than a people carrier etc

So anyone had one, what are they like running costs etc etc

and anyone got one for sale

You do know that Pajero isn't Spanish for ****** but it's pretty damn close?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bongo Friendee

we had 3 shoguns from new ,maybe not the best specced or best handling of 4w drives but in about ten years we never had a single breakdown.
Go for the later 3.2 diesel imo ,goes much better than the older 2.8's.

Thanks MG

this would be an older maybe 96/97 model we would be looking at, so choices are either 3.0V6 petrol or 2.8TD

we had 2 2.8' td's ,autos with diamond pack ,cant fault them ,100% reliable.
Tell you what they are very capable off road too ,most 4x4's actually seem rubbish off road but i took a few excursions in ours and with decent tyres they can trudge through anything ,massive towing capability too, used to pull caravan and it was a doddle.

yes I belive they are quite capable off road too

I had a rally driving day a while back, and they had a 4x4 off road course too, using Range Rovers and old Shoguns, they said the Shoguns were far superior and much quicker round their off road track than the Ranger Rovers

Originally I wanted a Hi Surf but they arent 7 seaters, I believe the Land Cruisers are but not sure on prices on those

I wonder if the 3.0V6 can be stripped of some weight and modded up a little

Saying that at a dealers the other week the Mitsi they had there wasnt standard exhausts, and the Nissan thing they had (Bongo lookalike) had a 350Z engine in it

My mates got a 1999 LWB 2.8 TD in blue, stick shift... It's the face lift one with the wider arches. Very nice, could pull a house down quite fast and very reliable.

I've drove it a few times and the only bad things I can tell are:
Fuel consumption - if you are in a hurry
Price of parts (just jap in general though)
turning circle - absolutely appalling. I suppose you would get used to it though.

Get one IMO

They are relaible and well built but in the last 5-7 years the competition have left them behind. Even the latest 3.2TD is modestly powered and unrefined compared to it's competition.
In this years 4X4 magazine's best family off roader the Shogun failed to make the grade on the off road course while most of it's rivals made it round with ease.

Saying that the old 2.8TD is a good buy if you dont mind the lack of grunt and fuel economy in the mid 20's

Cheers

My mates got a 3.0 V6, I joke to him that my Subaru's are better for fuel and that includes my track one.

Having said that it's done 150,000 miles so they are pretty bullet proof.
I have it here just now because it needs a new power steering box because it pi55es out fluid. That seems to be a common problem so have a look to make sure the idler arm is dry.

Picked one up this evening

An L reg 3.0V6 Auto for a reasonable price

Seems tidy, dry underneath, and just had some new tyres fitted, and has tax till end nov, and mot until april, everything works that should do apart from the electric aerial LOL

done about 30 miles in it (driving it back etc, including some motorway runs) seems pretty decent, got it for 1500, which seems to be a reasonable price

no rust on Bodywork either and chassis is relatively free from rust, and has FSH all done locally too

just need to sell the Laguna sharpish now

PM me a price for the Laguna mate and some details, fella in work is looking to get his lad a car asap. I just got a 95 1.4 Auto Clio for a very good price but not 100% with it, thinking of choppin it in for something Japanese? The micra finally died after 3 years of abuse, not mechanical though - rust

We've just got rid of a Hilux Surf (called the SportRider over here), to be honest they ain't recommended as a family car
As a pickup with a covered back - which is what they really are, and all ours got used as - they are superb (still a Toyota after all), but at heart they are still a work vehicle i.e; rather stiffly sprung and coarsely damped. Plus, they are a bit pikey

The only experience I've had of Shoguns is a mate's Dad's TD SWB Utility, twitchy isn't the word if you've got it in RWD and it's wet

Can't vouch for their off road ability as such, but he did manage to pull a laden 7.5Te wagon out of a muddy field with it once

sonic i've got a 4x4 pickup which i use as its meant for, 2.5td
fuel isn't bad if your not burying the throttle.
your shogun v6 won't be great around town on fuel
expect 15 to 20mpg and if you fly along motorways over 70/80 its down to 15ish again

best bet would be to gas convert it
and theres loads of room under the boot floor, so you don't lose any boot space, this makes petrol 4x4's more economical than diesels
other than that theres very little that gives trouble

I dont do that many miles any more, perhaps around 8k a year tops, motorway journeys are really short thesedays

I dont expect it to be that good on fuel, but this was going to be the case regardless having to get something bigger with more seats etc

I have seen some gas conversions for sale, but they have been pricier

this will do us for now at least, and it doesnt look too bad, and it has a tow bar, so could always tow the scoob somewhere for a play

Ive had 5 or 6 pajero / shoguns now, ranging from the V6, 2.5, 2.8 to the Pajero Evolution (300+bhp).

Current one is a 2.8 LWB, on an n plate. Good cars, well a lot of car for the ££££

Normally 100% reliable, however my HG went resulting in a new head (£761). Mines done around 110K miles which is the time head's seem to go, crack and need replacing. Cooling is the issue, as many imports have no coolant, but just water, resulting in rust.

The V6 model, good, but depends on the type of V6 you went for. Early ones are aful for power and mpg, newer ones have 24 valves, and are better.

Best site to go and learn about these trucks is :- The Mitsubishi Pajero Owners Club® :: Index

Good cars.

More than likely will bring it along to the Micklehead

Hopefully the Laguna wont take long to sell, so will *have* to use the Shogun

I quite enjoyed driving it last night, looking down on other drivers is fun, and watching them give way to you as you are in something much bigger they darent risk getting a scrape or bump

For a reliable, economical seven seater you can't do better than one of these:

Mine did Manchester to just outside Hastings and back on one tank of Diesel, with half a ton of Honda CB550 hanging from it's tow hitch

It was brilliant for intimidating people into giving way too

....typical brand/image snobbery....

For those who don't care/in the know, our 5 year old Shogun 4Work (used for work funnily) has been perfect.

It get's HARD use, and apart from a yearly service and 1 set of tyres (at 32k), has not needed so much as a bulb. Zilch.

Nothing has broken, fell off, stopped working, snapped, and it just feels better and better every time I jump in it.

Goes like a rocket too (stripped out version. Shogun Clubsport?) Stump pulling torque. Lad at work has a tuned 1600 Beetle: when it broke down and I stuok it on the trailer and took it home for him, he reckoned that the Shogun/Ifor Williams/Beetle combo pulles harder uphill than the Beetle itself. And they do a chip too..

Our old Defender would have fallen apart by now. Indeed, I took a ride in another lad at work's recent aquisition: a 2 year old Defender. Felt around 100 years old in comparison. And interestingly, has just been in for a new clutch slave cylinder, attention to an oil leak, knocking prop...

No they tend to have the new Range Rovers and Disco3's now.

They need the kerb weight and torque to pull the new pikey vans.

Wrong on all 3 counts, but then you are probably one of these people who think Staffy's are a devil dog too

But I also hate Shoguns - apart from the original ones.
