Mk 2 Golf GTI 8V

Andy, you can try http://www.vwvortex.com. It's US based but has useful info.
Get yourself into W.H.Smiths and have a browse through the VW mags available, such as The Golf etc. Should give you some ideas of who's who and what's available.
When you need parts (service, styling etc.) try http://www.eurocarparts.co.uk for an idea of how cheap the bits can be, especially compared to a scooby!
Have fun getting the inside rear wheel off the deck when cornering hard, like in all the 80s car mag covers!
Cheers,
Steve
BTW, if you (or anyone else) want a project or spares car, I've got a B reg Mk2 (one of the first) sat in my garage taking up space. Used to belong to Tim Stiles http://www.tsr-performance.com, but hasn't been run for a couple of years or so.

Had a mk2 16v! Great car but parts - ouch! Reliability - hmmm!(why i bought a Fiesta Turbo) Think its has to have BBS Style alloys on it though! Looks great if you get bigger ones! Mine had a stupidly huge exhaust on it but i replaced it due to headaches. Dont think you need to do much to them a they look smart to start with.

I had a mk2 Golf nearly 11 years ago!!
Parts were quite cheap then! Had a look recently and with German and Swedish (and whatever else now!!) parts are as cheap as ever.
Good thing with a Golf is that I'm willing to give the repairs ago, where as I won't have dared with the Scoob!

I had a mk2 8v for about 5 years. Great car, very reliable except for a fried ecu (expensive) and seized rear calipers (not quite as expensive). It also had a great appetite for distributor caps!
It was still on the original clutch when I sold it at 120000 miles.
Seemed quite fast too until I took a test drive in a Scoob

Andy,
I had a Mk2 Golf GTI 8V. Cracking car. Twas a big bumper model in Tornado Red and had BBS's etc. Did 106,000 miles and never missed a beat. Had a Scorpion twin square exhaust on it and filter, but needed 16" BBS RC's and Konis to complete the look. Problem was that a G60 came along so I sold the 8V!
Would have another one tomorrow if I can get hold of a decent one. Bloke near me has a F plate 8V with 13K miles on the clock! Fantastic.
