Default Nissan 200sx

Just sold the scoob and have about 10k to play with. Was thinking of a type r scoob, but really fancy RWD again. Iv'e been looking at the nissan 200sx touring as these seem really popular on the drift scene, i dont want one for drifting, but i do like the idea of big power/turbo and RWD. How reliable are these and what about running/tuning costs. I hav'nt been on the sxoc yet as they are bound to be partialy biased. So any info would be great

Owned my 14a for 5 years and 50,000 miles now. Spent a total of £185 in repairs in that time. Usually returns 28-30mpg, insurance group 17 to give you an idea of costs.

Reliability can suffer if you start extracting big power from them (gearboxes can fail), but a well maintained example should be ok for big miles. 150,000 miles on original engine is easily achievable with the right maintenance. Will obviously go through rear tyres pretty quickly but these aren't dear if you keep the standard wheels.

They're starting to rust a little now, but it's generally only cosmetic. It's genuinely been the most reliable car I have owned.

i had a brand new one on lease for 2 years ,cant fault it in anyway at all .
Totally reliable ,great fun ,looked good werent too bad on fuel either .
Great handling if a little soft as standard but steers with the right foot like nothing else and performance is good too ,effortless performance on the
motorway, just picks up in 5th really well and goes ,will pull 150 mph.
Fairly long geared ,would pull 105mph in 3rd , sounds a little harsh at high revs but will take some stick !!.
Shop around for a nice one and im sure you will have bags of reliable fun.

I was gonna buy a mint 48,000 mile S14 200sx for 2,500. Im sad that I never. Still looking into getting one as a weekend toy/hobby/project.

The price for them seem to be going up a bit now though which I assume is because of the drifting demand!

I noticed that, i fancy a modded one though to be honest, as i am fed up of spending all my money to extract more power. I want one already done at someone elses expense.

Or buy a car that has enough power to not need modifying in the first place.

S15 = 250hp

S14 = 215hp

I think this is what you meant. S14 is better for drifting apparently. SR20DETT engine meant to be pretty much bulletproof.

10K is a big budget for a 200sx. But if you really need to get rid of it, you could consider a RB26DETT conversion for some serious power.
My mat has an s14a. Its the only other motor I would consider after the Scoobs.

S15 is the one to get and is obtainable for £10K.

S13 was a great car but nissan lost the plot a bit with the S14 (still a great car but not so much of a drivers car). S15 is a big improvement and you get more power plus a 6 speed box. And they look great. I was thinking about getting one.

All the sx200's are good cars with great bang for the buck, I am just comparing the models with each other.

S14s are going well cheep right now due to them getting on a bit, plus they look a bit bland compared to the face lift "s14a", but both are near identical in the oily bits department.
S15 is again very similar to the s14 and s14a, but looks nicer, has more structural stiffening and a bit more power as standard, also has a better lsd and generally handles better.

All are great cars, fast as stock but utter animals once given a poke. 300hp is easy out of them with a few tweaks just for starters.

Handling is very balanced as standard, grip is a bit pants but thats generally down to the stock setup with rubbish tyres (these things really need good rubber). Mild suspension mods result in a wicked handling car that in the dry at least can really shift it down a bendy bit of road like many a scooby driver could relate to.

They can take loads of abuse and the sky's the limit for tuning near enough.

Thanks for the advice, I take it your a drifter due to your knowledge of the 200SX and going by your username!

I want to get a S14a 200sx, strip it out stick in a rollcage, unrestricted exhaust, remap, coilovers and high grip tyres. Should be alot of fun for not alot of money

I might know of a well tuned good nick one for sale (S14) if you are interested. Touring spec too with the leather and that but full RLTC and about 300bhp+

Brother in law is thinking of selling it. Has hardly turned a wheel in a year but had some serious wedge spent on it.

5t.

I've got an S14a myself and it's a superb car.

Pic >>>

They're not expensive to buy these days and they are cheap to run, reasonable to insure, easy to tune, generally very reliable, good on fuel, etc... need I go on...

As standard they were nothing special, a restrictive exhaust with two cats, low pressure progressive boost delivery with even lower boost in the first two gears, coupled with VVT and long gearing, all work together to dumb down the standard 200bhp and make it feel pretty average really.

However, it's very easy to sort that out, with a few basic mods you can transform them into a completely different car!

Doesn't take much money to make them into a very quick car either... I bought mine with a few base mods and then I've added to it gradually over the past year and a half, loving every minute of it so far...

Default Spanner in the works

You could pick up a R33 GTS-T skyline for 10K thats been ,modded to over 400bhp. Bit more torque too from the 2.5 and rear wheel drive.

Andy.
