Default BMW e46 series - CD autochanger question

How inter-changeable are these ? I've got an error coming up on the dash display saying "NO MAGAZINE"

I've checked the autochanger in the boot and its not responding at all when I press the eject button - it seems dead.

Question is, does the changer use a proprietary connector, or am I free to use other makes of autochanger as a replacement ?

Unusual for it to just die like that, usually it is read faults as the laser gets older/weaker.

I would look to the connectors either end first.

Check the part number on your changer against the numbers on any you look to buy as not all are compatable.
I bought 1 for my 2002 model as the origional packed up and the replacement had a different connector.
A bloke i knew was a electronics guru and swapped a new Alpine changer internals to fit the bmw casing/ connector and all was well

Try a different cartridge 1st as sometimes thats the problem

Good point - I've noticed over the last month, it stopped reading some discs inserted into the 6 disc 'magazine', so you're right - it wasn't all of a sudden. Its got progressively worse over a month.
