As above...BMW seem to think so given the extended warranty prices and conditions. What are peoples thoughts?

It's pot luck really, I owned a high mile (120k) M3 and it was utterly faultless during my ownership and needed nothing other than tyres/servicing etc.
Theres many that do go wrong though, so it depends on how brave you are feeling. Having said that, I'm not a great believer in the warranty etc, as it costs far too much, and if the car does go wrong you can usually find a specialist to fix it at a much more reasonable price than BMW would ever charge...
HHaving said all of that, E46 M3s are SOO cheap now, go for it!

Evo ran a Buying guide for 2nd hand M3's a few months back. Lots of potential problem with the Engines.
Make sure all Engine updates have been done by the dealer. I wouldn't buy an M3 without getting a full warranty every year. Incidentally, BMW raised the price of warranties not so long back. Tell's it's own story that.

For every tale of woe told, there are many satisfied owners..
Forums are full of people airing their problems......but people who are satisfied with their cars will just quietly be enjoying!!
You can get a decent sec m3 for sub £20k now...thats a serious car for not a lot of cash....
