Lancia Delta - Money pits?
Still trying to fill the Impreza shaped hole in my life.
Seen an EVO1 I really fancy and I know a few on here have had them.
Are they really the money pits everyone says they are? I'll not be using it as daily but will be out in wet/dry weather and it will be tucked up for most of the winter as I did with my scoob.
Guess parts and a specialist can be hard to find?
thanks

I was talking to someone last night who said they used to own a german motorsport version with about 350bhp(I know nothing about the car so that may be a tuned version), he said he absolutely loved that car, but it cost a fortune to fix.
He had someone drive into the front bumper and cause a small crack, and the car was in the garage for 3 months while a new bumper was fabricated for him. Also when a part needed replacing (think he said the alternator), his mechanic had to spend 7 hours with a mobile taped to his head, while a lancia specialist talked him through removing the engine and changing the part, he didn't mention how much it cost, but he did mention he'd had to pay his mechanic, and the lancia bloke for their time.
He also said it was totally impractical for normal driving in traffic, and it would overheat in 5-10 minutes of town driving.
It was very clear that he really did love that car though, he didn't really care about the expense or the downsides of ownership, but he is absolutely loaded, so money was not a concern for him.

Most important is get a good one to start! Get someone knowledgeable with delts *not* just a mechanically savvy mate....you do really need experienced help when looking if you don't know about them yourself. Most will require work, and it'll usually be cheap for a very good reason, so dont buy cheap unless you want to do-it-up (good luck).
Even the mint-est shells will rust, mine was a new EVO1 shell but was kept in th open, had major rust probs after two years lol!
Engine wise, it'd done 40k, had recently been rebuilt and uprated to around 260bhp (felt quick enough). Never missed a beat in 2 years, was regularly serviced.
Electrics in mine were fine too, although I believe this can be a problem on some cars.
Parts can be found and some good indepent specialists available too , just beware some jobs can be very labour intensive thus expensive to perform.
That sad only prob i had with mine was corrossion, if it'd been garaged i might have got away with it.
I didn't spend alot on it, was bar none the best car i've driven...you really do feel uber cool driving a grale down the street lol....nobody thinks posing **** etc u just get acknowledgeable glances and respect. Handling was much better than me too i never ever got it to break grip altho may be i'm a fanny.
Loved the car, but sold it as a lost due to the bodywork going down hill fast. It's still going strong though with a bit of TLC with new owners I believe.
It's a car, if you have a lucky experience with them, will spoil your future car experiences forever.
Just why didnt lancia rustproof them ...oh the interior is circa 1970's but that adds to the charm .
They do go well though mine felt as fast as any of the 4 scoobs i've had, and handled better.
Good Luck!

Thanks for advice.
Its this one I really like. Lancia : EVO I Verde York!
Always wanted a yellow one but I do like this. Assuming I got one it would be garaged all the time and I would only use it rarely in the wet or winter if I didn't have access to another car (something I did with my Impreza)

They`re awesome cars, just a pity about being lhd, and I`ve had a lhd. There`s a specialist not too far from me who always have some top motors in stock - pricey though
Lancia Delta specialists Walkers Garage, Lancia Delta Parts and a full range of Lancia accessories

Dad had a brand new Beta Turbo in the late 70s (or early 80s - can't quite remember) - Rusty ON DELIVERY and on it's third engine after 18 months!
So did the UK stop importing them?

Used to own a HF Martini (not an Integrale, I know) many years ago. Boutght it at 1 year old in 1989, and still don't really know why I sold it at the time. Never had any major problem with rust, just a spot on the offside rear door, and a couple of spots on one wheelarch where it had been stonechipped. Funnily enough, it was still going strong when I bought the Scoob 6 years ago. MAybe I was lucky with the rust, although I did manage to blow the turbo - which wasn't exactly cheap.

Hello,
Can bring this back from the dead?
Bee thinking about buying a non EVO delta and giving it a try. If I like it and can cope with maintenance then I might look at going further with an EVO.
I've looked at servicing at John Whalley and its not horrific. At least on par with an Impreza. Insurance is bugger all (£400 for compared to near £700 for a P1) and it would satisfy an itch I've had for as long as I can remember.
Only thing I have against me is not knowing anyone locally who has the foggiest about Deltas.

Paul Palmer, sometime of these parts, used to own one too, I seem to recall he spent a not inconsiderable sum keeping his running

I've had my Evo1 for nearly seven years. Awesome cars. You really have to drive one to feel how different they are to Jap performance stuff. The steering and handling in particular are on another level. And still the most successful rally car of all time (and probably always will be with 6 straight WRC championships - every year it was entered). I will never, ever sell it.
Money pits? As has been said before, buy a good one and no, not really, provided you DO NOT skimp on good oil and regular maintenance. Buy a cheap donkey, though, and it will bite you on the @rse.
LHD? Never been a problem for me. Rust? yep, mainly on the back of the roof in the boot and forward of the windscreen. But nowhere near as bad as people make out. And a good one will have been sorted by now.

There is a big owners' run from London to Brighton on Sept 1st if you want to see 100+ Grales in one place and drool :0)

You stuffy git
gorgeous car mate

Thanks, mate. Mine is pushing out about 290bhp, although there are cars I know doing 300+. Actually the internals are pretty solid - they don't knacker their No.3 main bearing like Scoobs :0) Cambelts are prone to snapping, tho, and must be changed every couple of years. And you want a Group A gasket if you're running big boost (mine does 1.7bar on its trackday setting). It's done done dozens of trackdays, the Ring etc and never missed a beat.

And again Rob
Haven't got any plans to bugger with a Delta if I get one. In some ways I wish I'd left my Impreza standard. Sometimes I felt it was just too "in your face"
Bit of power and handling fettle if it needs it but mostly I want it to stay as original as possible. I love EVO II seats and if possible I'd consider changing them but I would always keep the originals tucked away safely (just in case)
Now, all I got to do is convince the wife. She liked the "look at me, I drive a Subaru" (shes a bit of a chav bless her ) but she'll soon get fed up with her mates saying "He's bought a what?"

A mild chip will give you 260bhp, but even as standard they ain't slow, even by today's standards (remember they are a couple of hundred kgs lighter than cars full of aircon and side impact bars).
Handling is spot on already; just change the bushes and get the alignment done properly. Evo2 highback Recaros are lovely, but everybody wants them and they go for biiig money (although replicas are available if you're not fussy). Remember you sit a bit higher in highbacks, which can be a problem if you're tall (I'm 6ft 5in).
The fact that only True Believers know what it is is one of the things I like best! I'm forever getting kids leaning out of cars taking pics with their phones. Still gets voted one of the coolest cars of all time, and waaay classier than a Scoob will ever be :0)

Red with black leather does look rather
Think the one I've been chatting to the owner of is black. Yellow EVO2 would be uber cool. The verde york interior is soo pretty - just seems to ooze italian-ness if you get me
A chap on the Lancia forum said that someone once asked him where he got the bodykit for his golf - and do you know what? My wife showed a picture of a 'grale to her friend and the girl replies "Your getting a golf?"
They just did not understand the tears of laughter on my face
EDIT - or the other line over the weekend "Thats not an EVO!" "The term EVO isn't exclusive to Mitsubishi dear"
