Default Which luxury car...

...for my old man??

He currently runs a 2001 E39 530i Petrol and does around 25k a year mileage wise. He has been really impressed with the 5-series, but its starting to knock on a wee bit and the miles are a little high at 140k so thinking that its time to send it to a well known auction site on the internet and find a replacement.

The replacement has GOT to tick the following boxes:

- Use a 6-cylinder turbo diesel due to the mileage
- Size of the car has to be comparable to the E39 530i that he's got currently
- Full Leather/Climate/CD etc
- 2003 onwards
- Maximum budget of 18k (not worth spending more as with the miles he does, it'll be worthless soon enough)

Obviously, because he's been so impressed with his current BMW, he's considering going to the E60 530d SE.. But he is also thinking about a Mercedes E-Class 320 CDi Avantgarde that I saw for sale recently, does anyone have any thoughts, good or bad about these two cars?? Also, any other suggestions that might be worth a look??

Cheers,
Grant

Audi A6 TDi?

Would recommend the S4, but they're not exactly frugal

Grant,

At that money you should be able to pick up a 2004 E320 Cdi Avantgarde spec. Great cars, i have a 55 Plate that the missus use's as her daily transport. 5 Star NCAP safety rating so her & the kids are all cotton wooled up
I think they changed the engines on the 05 onwards, mines has the new style engine (Euro4).
The merc is a stonking car for what it is.

What about a phaeton ?

Jag Turbo Diesel... Thought about that, and had a wee drive in an S-Type 2.7TD SE Auto and it was a really nice car, but wasn't too sure about long term/high mileage reliability or how well it would wear as whatever car he buys will pile on the miles.

The E320CDi that I found for him was a 54-plate 4dr in Black with a good few toys fitted and c60k miles with FMBSH for a shade over £17k. A friend of mine has one of these and reports that even sticking cruise control on at 85mph he's getting 41-42mpg?! Thats really very impressive.

Considered a Phaeton, but the ones I could find in this sort of price range were 3.2 Petrol models which isn't really what he's wanting/needing at the moment.. if you have any contacts that could get hold of a 3.0TDi for a bargain price then I'd be happy to pass the details onto him.

730d, never actually realised that you could get hold of one of these cars for this sort of money. A very quick browse on autotrader showed up a few cars at around the budget that he might be interested in.. certainly come with plenty of kit and he's not overly concerned with the appearance of the car. Do they ride ok, couple of them said they have 19" alloys fitted?! Thats got to give a pretty choppy ride!!

Cheers,
Grant
