Default Diesel - 307 or Golf/bora

Looking for a 5dr TDI diesel soon - not a racer - 110 bhp is fine

any opinions of which would be a better car

Peugeot 307HDI or Golf TDi

year around 2003/4 models

not had a diesel for many years since I was lucky enough to have company 405's.

thanks
David

Golf GT TDI - got one myself and it's a nice motor and mid-40s to the gallon.

I've got a Bora TDi PD130 Sport (2001 model). Great engine, I drive foot to the floor everywhere and it still gives 46mpg. 6 speed gearbox means very relaxed legal motorway speeds. The handling and ride are woeful though and they are not a drivers car by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, mine eats tyres at twice the rate my Scoobys ever did (don't know if that's normal or whether my alignment is fooked)

Don't touch the 307.

The missus had one and had four or five recalls that said that car might burst into flames/brakes fall off etc.

The thing was only 2 years old when we gave up and sold it, it was falling apart. Shocking build quality.

I had the PD150 engine, fast and economic, second the comments about handling (swapped mine for an Accord TypeS). Michelin Premacy tyres lasted 95k rear, 55k front - check your suspension out.

Ive got one of these too, can beat it. Mine does not eat tyres though. Would not touch a French car with a barge pole after my 206Hdi episodes. The PD130 is great, goes well, economical, and huge boot. Rear leg room is compromised a little for the extra boot space. Bora all the way. Better spec for the same money, when compared to a Golf.

Neither of the above, VW are over rated with over rated engines, Peugeot engines are not bad but the 307 has suffered problems over the years and its due for replacement shortly, personally, you want probably the best family diesel in the class with good reliability and handling (and as vw is only just above peuegot for reliability) well its got to be a vauxhall astra CDTi (better engine than both the above )

Most manufacturers are more reliable than peugeot, and to say that VW is barely better is a joke.

VAG diesel engines are class leading, why are you trying to push that opel/vauxhall crap onto the guy?

Personally I would get a Seat, faster cheaper and better to drive than equivelant VW

Speak to the consumers vw is hardly more reliable than peugeot, proven by the ammount of warranty claims/recoveries of said vehicles

Whoever told you that vag engines are class leading is having a laugh

Or skoda but the vauxhall is a better all round car with a better engine, unfortunately you cant change that

thanks for replies - made me re-assess as I prefer the interior of 307 - golf interior looks bland and cheap unless you get a high spec model.

Tony - have vauxhall made a big leap in diesel engine technology as I remember their old astra and vectra diesels as company cars and they were woeful- but if the new astras are much better may have a look.

thanks again - may now consider seat leon also
