MK2 GOLF 20V TURBO
Hello all..Seriously thinking about my next project and as the
Title suggests thats what Im planning on doing............
Got a nice little wad of cash so Im not looking at doing it myself...As yet Ive got to source the car and a T.T/S3/CUPRA engine...
Couple of Questions for anyone who has experience of them.........
1.Are these things quick.....I.e. worth doing..
2.What do they handle like with the conversion in....
3.budgeted on a bout 5k for the conversion is this enough.
4.ANYMORE INFO on the subject would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks in advance...........

Is it quick ?
An LCR is quick, so the same engine, fettled in a lighter care will be fairly brisk !
Handling wise, the turbo install is heavier but not as much as a VR6 so it should **** the handling too much, it will be heavier than the old 8 or 16 valve engine as there is a turbo and a load more plumbing.

my mate has one of these engines in his green scirocco bored out to a 1.9 with all the goodies on and its pushing 500bhp on race fuel. He's done a 10.3 quarter mile this year, and he is looking to get in the nine's this year. And he is running a standard crank

Get yourself over to :: northloop.co.uk :: we're not playing games :: nurburgring galleries and more :: There is a wealth of knowledge on the forum of people doing this sort of thing. My friend is currently doing something similar. Current estimates sit at 270-290bhp.

I did a 20vt conversion with a friend. The engine was first in a Mk2, and it's now in a Corrado.
If you fit a later gearbox (more strength), and an ATB diff while you're at it, you'll be surprised how well they can put down the power.
If you do a track day in one, and it's a reasonably well sorted car (suspension and brakes), you'll find yourself confusing quite a few people: "what's under the bonnet?"
My friend is running an AUQ engine (Leon Cupra 180 / Mk4 Golf Anniversary...) in the Corrado with a TT-225 turbo on it, and it's got in the region of 270bhp. The same car, with the previous owner's engine (again a 20vt), was timed on a Racelogic box at Bruntingthorpe, and with an OPEN diff it managed 5.5 secs 0-60, ~12 secs 0-100. I think he hit the rev limiter in 5th at about 155.
Here's a video from an airfield day, back when the engine was in the Golf, and there was no ATB. It was an early stint, I was getting used to the car (honest!!).... and making lots of errors! YouTube - Keevil airfield day 5th March 2007 - Mark's 20vt Golf For reference, the car hits about 125 on the straights, but the video really masks the speed.
Incidentally, it's a doddle of a conversion, and I wouldn't suggest paying someone to do it. The engine bolts straight in, downpipes are available off the shelf, etc.. The key thing to having a good 20vt install, is the management - this is the area people easily screw up. There are lots of dogs out there with shady mapping on standalone ECUs, people running OEM management badly (with lots of error codes...). I can thoroughly recommend these chaps: Quantum Performance Engineering - Home. It's a business run as a hobby, and the two guys know their stuff: One was doing engine research for VAG, and the other used to map ECUs for clients in the motorsports industry.
Whatever you do, it'll be fun, and you'll get a lot of bang for your buck.
Cheers,
John.

Handling is fun with uprated suspension (Koni's and uprated ARBs)

1/ Earlier Mk2s (pre '88ish) were a lot better built than the very late cars, ideally you want one that's just post face-lift (no quarterlights, RHD wipers).
2/ Don't restrict yourself to the GTi in your search, the 20V engine/box will go straight into anything that has the 1.6/1.8 engine in, and can be made to fit anything that has the 1.3 in it with not much more extra work.
Good luck and keep us posted
Projects would be a good place to put it

Couple of things ......Had a 88 16v in helious blue years back but always lusted after the later 90 spec golfs.....
Another, thought it was easier doing the conversion with a 90 spec because the electrics and the looms were different to the earlier models...
Either way its gonna be fun...end of the day thats what its all about eh

Thread Revival,
Am looking in earnest for a 20VT converted Golf mk1/2 or Corrado so if anyone has any leads...
No Dogs dinners, flush tailgates, side exahusts, stripped out track day weapons with flip paint, must look standard ish, perhaps nicer wheels, slightly lower.
Just getting some money together so no hurry but interested to see if anyone knows of anythign, an aware of the ones on PH and Edition 38.
