Default help needed

hi my mums boyfreind has bought a renult(sorry about the spelling) laguna and for a week it ran quite well, but when a week had past the timing belt broke while he was on a dual carriage way ,he got it picked up and taken back to are house. The dealer who he had bought it off for £1500 has taken it back to do the repairs.
Does my mums boyfreind have any right in not paying towards the repair of new valves ,timing belt e.t.c because he only had it for a week .
help will be very helpfull cheers tom

if it was a dealer then he should be covered under the sales of goos act (fit for purpose).

ie. not have to pay for an damage caused
