Default VW passats and ac water

i just went to see a passat with a freind who was looking at purchasing. The car was a dog to be fair and so he walked away but it left us wondering about the amount of water that was coming out of it.
It was dropping large amounts of warm water on the road underneath it which didn't appear to have any coolant or anything in it and this was put down to the air con.
The question is just how much water should come out of these as i have never seen a car dropping as much water as this from the air con. My car hardly seems to drop any and im wondering what is normal.
Would anyone else have concerns about this or just put it down to the aircon and not be bothered by it at all..
This wasn't the reason the car wasn't bought.. other things were more important but it has made me think since.
Any opinions really welcome. Cheers
