Default Clio 172 Cambelt Change

Hi All

Been asking about on a few forums about the changing of a clio 172 cambelt. I have just bought a 6 year old one with 55k on the clock. The cambelt hasnt been changed during the life of the car.

Its supposed to be done every 5 years or 72k (whichever comes first).

I have it booked in later this month to be done which is the earliest i can get it done.

At the minute though i am kind of bricking it about driving it and the cambelt going . Anyone had any experience in this department?. How likely is it to go and snap?.

Cheers in advance.

I have no idea. Just drive carefully and don't rev the nuts off it. Its not done mega mileage so you'd expect it to be fine. I had mine changed earlier this year as its 5 years was up. Mileage was only 35k though and the belt was in a pretty good condition still. I should think you'll be fine.

Also pop your head under the bonnet with the engine off and take a look at the aux belt as well. You can just see it front left. Is it correctly aligned on the tensioners and does the belt look worn? A worn or misaligned one can create expensive problems too. I found this out when mine damaged the cambelt after just 20k.
This gets replaced as part of the cambelt change and also every two years.

I've just had mine changed at 74k (54Reg - 182) and the old belt didn't look too bad and as for the aux belt it looked brand new, and I generally don't hang about. I hope you're not taking it to a Renault dealer I was quoted £721 Got it done at a specialist for £400

having got a quote from renault for £650 for the cambelt i have been hunting around.

I have found a renault mechanic who also does private work to change it for me so that will be good. just need a date now to get it done.

Had a look at the belts last night and they seem ok, no splits or cracks but i will be keeping a close eye on it over the next few weeks.

If you fancy a drive an hour down south there's a great specialist in Exmouth, wouldn't trust anyone else with my 172

Also make sure you get the full cam kit (about £120 on it's own ) which includes all the replacement tensioners etc, and obv the aux done as well

LOL I'd imagine it's the same sort of a job as on a Clio 16v or Williams i.e. a *******. Get it done pronto.

Hill Power (Nick Hill) east Midlands used to look after my 16v and 172 and I wouldn't take a hot Ren anywhere else..!

Probably too far coming from Bristol, although IMO, worth it..

Work must be sparse to be hunting round internet forums for potential jobs that happened a couple years ago..

There's no way to tell for certain unless you whip the cover off and inspect the belt, but I ran mine to 8 years old and 80k+ without changing it (thought it had been done already) and it was fine. That's with trackdays etc too.

Unlikely to go imo, but you never know I suppose, it is French afterall! All in all the engines are pretty strong, I wouldn't be particularly worried though mate.

edit - doh, just realised this was bumped from 2 years ago... I FAIL

Sorry to bump a 6 and half year old thread but I am thinking of getting a Clio 172 for a daily driver, especially as fuel seems to be getting cheaper by the week!

The local one I have seen has 60k but has lost its service history, so I would want the cam & aux belt and dephaser changed asap, I thought this was a 5 or 6 hour job even with the correct tools? I can’t see how anyone could do it for £245!

Agree £245 is too suspiciously cheap.
For the whole lot inc dephaser is £500 mark and that's from a specialist.

You can get the parts inc dephaser for £220 and plenty of places can fit them for circa £200-£250

Its not that hard to do it yourself if you have the cam locking tools.

What ever you do get a specialist or someone that has done a few Clio engines!

I did mine and I borrowed the genuine Renault Tools as any other brand will bend the cam locking tool.

Not over difficult but as they are floating pulleys you need to ensure nothing moves, also worth changing the dephaser while your at it cost about £100
