Audi Oil starvation: One for Audilover
Over recent weeks I've had the (dis)pleasure of stripping down a shed of an Audi A4 1.8T.
The engine was dead from unknown reasons, and on progressive disassembly was found to have suffered from severe lack of servicing and lack of oil changes.
Consequently the oil pickup had blocked up up with crap....
Now, if this were a Subaru, if you listen to the retentives on this board, you'd note that just by not filling up the oil filter during an oilchange will make it dry up the big end bearings and kill the engine (of course I know this is complete twaddle, but really can't be bothered to lock horns and lock them up in their little box so they can't give out anymore anally retentive "advice" )
Anyhoo, back to the Audi suffering with severe oil starvation. It was found to have seized the cams in the head, well ok, it had no oil pressure, so understandable. But how about those big end and main bearings eh? Subarus fry big ends for breakfast at the hint of an oil problem (allegedly), so how did the Audi fair? Well, it was perfectly servicable, all the clearances were within tolerance and no debris marks or anything on the journal surfaces or bearing shells.
So there you go, you don't need oil pressure to run an Audi bottom end, however, the cams won't like it much
Oh, and the turbo has seized too
No point to this post apart from its a perfect case example that an engine's big end and main bearing don't need much oil pressure to operate; They just need a bit of flow.

No chance, I'd rather buy a Korean car
However, I have spent the last 2 weeks driving a Kia C'eed, and was actually quite impressed with it
