Default What second car are you running?

Hi guys how you doing?

If you had £1k - £1.5k to spend on a second car, what would you get [or got, if you currently run a cheap run about].

I'm thinking about doing this so when I buy a Scooby in the future, I wont have to use it for the supermarket runs!

- First off, the car has to be cool.
- The car has to fit me [I'm 6' 6"], so that knocks out a lot of the smallest supermini's.
- I don't want a diesel, but I guess a 1 - 1.4L petrol car would be fine?

I think that's the only must have's - so what do you reckon?

Thumbs up

Specie lives in the garage

So have a Pug 205 GTI as my daily classic, great fun to drive not that good on fuel 27-32 mpg, cheap to insure and spare parts arent too bad you will need to look for a non sunroof version to fit though.

Looking to swap it out to a Pug 306 XSI or Puma 1.7 once it hits 100k

I bought a Rover 200VI off ebay for £350. Never let me down once (yet)

I also just got an MR2 for nothing that I may run around in for a while.

I think you will be looking at a cheap ford as.

How about a classic Saab ??

I use a 95 Golf Driver. Been in the family since 40K and is now on 127K.

Used and abused and does the job without a problem. The suspension is a bit tired and in need of some TLC but I got it free and its much less worrying for me on the school run and crappy days using that than the Impreza.

I have a peugeot 205 1.9 Gti which is for sale btw.
You can have a look here: Peugeot : 1.9 Gti-S
I was going to bring the car back to UK in Easter but due to change of plans it is now for sale in France where I have been living lately.
PM me for details.
I have dropped the price to 2400 to take into account the travelling costs.

I have a 91 cavalier sri hatchback. Great size for the young family (pushchair etc) and the mpg isn't bad considering it's a 2 litre.

That's a nice 205 Fpan

I used to run a 309 XSi as a 2nd runabout. It did me well for when I dad it, but I sold it on when I didnt need a "daily driver".

I run a 1.0L 1988 Vauxhall Nova in the winter months and for general running around...the old girl was even used to travel from Northampton to Plymouth (530 mile round trip) every 2 weeks for most of last summer and was faultless despite being having thrashed constantly for 4 hours each way.

Ive had it 7 - 8 years now and it refuses to die or fail an MOT on anything major...it was even stolen last year by some moron who wanted to carry out a robbery in the local village but we got it back with a smashed interior light and knackered steering lock .

Its rarely washed and maybe treated to an oil service every other year, its never even had any brake shoes or pads fitted!

Maybe its worth £2-£300 now but itll be a sad day when its finally fails the MOT big time.

viva la Vauxhall!

He said it had to be cool, people! That might not be realistic, but I don't think rovers, cavs or mondies are in that region.

I like the classic Saab 900 idea. Nice cars, very solid. Not cheap to run though.

Or a mk2 golf. Much as I loved the 205, I don't fancy one in the slightly tired condition that most are in now.

I had/still have 1999 Astra 20 DTI, but just bought a Clio 182 as run about, I know not in price range but Astra was bought off ebay 3 years ago for £2500 and has never let me down. Just found myself using Impreza to much still due to performance short fall..........

Clio is good around town and has a bit of grunt if needed.

You what?

Surely you cant class a car that must have cost a minimum of £7k, and with that sort of performance as a runabout?

Actually the 182 was a stael off a Greek Student who was unable to afford the insurance after having to move fron Brighton to Huddersfield. £6500, car still has warranty and is straight.
Couldnt believe howvcheap I got it but he was paying £120 per month insurance so cut his loses.

I am also considering the 2 car combo approach when I get things sorted home parking wise. I don't know about anyone else but the "second" car can't be something I actually "like" too much otherwise it defeats the object of it 4 me i.e. if you like it "too much" you still end up parking it to protect the bodywork etc......I almost need to have something I know I loath so I park it any old where......the downside to that is you have to live with the loathsome hack on a daily basis. Is there such a car which isn't quite so loathsome to drive but also wouldn't make me get too attached to it ?

Yep I def need to get out more.............but I would bet I am not the only one here who knows what I am talking about
