Smile Quickest car for up to 5 grand

Hi,

What are people's thoughts on the quickest car they've had or experienced that could be bought for up to £5,000?

Of course, an Impreza is my current choice.

Many thanks,

David

if its cheap and fast, it isnt reliable

if its fast and reliable, it isnt cheap

fast is a matter of money, how fast do you want to spend?

I will get a bit of jip for saying this.... but a golf mk4 1.8t chipped to 200bhp/231lbft of torque

0-60 in about 6.2/6.5 and 0-100mph in 15 seconds

Lots of torque and great in gear accelleration..... but the handling is kack to say the least.

What's quick? Fastest 0-60, fastest at the Pod, fastest top speed, fastest 40-70, fastest in the twisties, or fastest feeling? There's a different answer for each.

Accord Type R's are within that price range, not massively fast but they are reliable, have great seats, discrete and handle amazingly well.

300ZX TT, easily get a good one for £5k, looking at an easy 400hp/190mph for that money.

Excellent! Thanks for all the replies.

Brendan, I agree with all your catagories. Any cars that tick most of the boxes?

Could be tempted for a Westfield. Anyone had a bad experience with one?

Having driven, owned and tried most of them.(non scoobs sub 5K spend)

And totally non biased I would have to say a UK classic scoob with Service history. On paper a early WRX might be 20 or 40bhp less BHP depending on which year but in reality the UK is just as quick. And the UK will be mapped for UK fuel, will likely be looked after and serviced.

You can get a MY96-98 for sub 5K, and if your patient and haggle you should even get a facelift MY99 for 5K.

Only other car I would suggest is a E36 M3 (not the EVO). But the Scoob will be much more fun to drive and feel allot more chuckable.

Pounds per reliable smiles a UK scoob cannot be beat IMHO.

If you want ***** out performance on a budget get a RX7 for 5K. But be prepared to have some deep pockets.

I think you will struggle to get a OK westie for sub 5K. Even good westies go for over 5K. Great car though, but only good as a total toy.

You might get a robin Hood or Westie copy equivalant for sub 5K. But you probably need to be a little hands on with the mechanics.

A Mitsubishi Evo IV can be easily had for £5K. One of the fastest cars point to point for that price.

A Evo IV would be my choice if I had to spend £5k on a quick car,Or maybe I would be tempted with a Nissan Skyline R33 GTS or a Mazda RX7!!!!!

What about a Supra TT. Can get those for around 5k now. Got an n/a at the moment (Selling it to help fund an Sti) but think it's slower than a standard wrx though.

You can have a Gtir and be doing high 12sec 1/4s for under 5K these days. I doubt much will beat that for fast. It should reach around 160mph if you want top speed quickest.
