I think you need to add a couple of "ish's"..
Fast-ish & reliable-ish
Should be able to find a few that fit the bill. I guess your looking at a S...ball contender then.

I paid £1350 for 120k example with FSH and a nice mid level spec and manual gearbox. I bought an ECU too which takes it over 300hp [ish ].
The results are
0-60 6 - 6.5 [approx]
0-100 15-16 seconds [approx]
1/4 mile 14.5 @ 95 [approx]
20-40mph - ??? secs
30-50mph - ??? secs
40-60mph - ??? secs
50-70mph - 3.0 secs [approx]
60-80mph - 3.0 secs [approx]
70-90mph - 4.0 secs [approx]
80-100mph - 4.0 secs [approx]
100-120mph - 5.0 secs [approx]
Not bad for an old barge. Good luck in your search
P.S Where in Derbyshire are you?

I'm also looking for a sub £500 car , and have narrowed down the search to:
Merc W124, preferably a 300E
Vx Omega
BMW 5-series
Nissan Maxima
Ford Scorpio
As we have a bit of time, I'm taking it easy and will see what will come along in the local auctions or free ads paper.

The problem is that even where a car is mechanically fit and safe (and might even have a few years steady motoring left in it) they usually cant cope with being driven hard for even a couple of hours, it finishes them off.
So, we need a safe quick and reliable car thatll cope with at least three days of spirited driving.....
Its all for chairty though!

Rover 800 Sterling, Autocar bought one for 100 quid to do the Beaujolais run, it survived wheras many of the 100k cars didnt !
How about a Saab 9000, should get one for that, try and get one of he higher powered ones, fast and robust.

Go for the omega, it'll be the newest car for the money. I've had one and my dad has had 2, bothe 200k plus. String, reasonably reliable, cheap parts etc.

The shortlist includes big six BMWs; old V8 S-Class Mercedes and HPT Volvo 900 estates... Most Saabs (which we have considered) seem to use LPTs which are underwhelming. We talked about Rovers this afternoon (800 & 600 turbos mostly), but theyre SO unreliable. I think that itd be even harder to find a decent one within our budget.

This is interesting for the money eBay.co.uk: Ford Sierra XR4x4 Turbo Technics + Cosworth Alloys (item 150068144075 end time 13-Dec-06 20:00:00 GMT)

My Saab is an 9-3 LPT and it shifts, quicker than most of the old V6 Auto barges mentioned here, compares favourably to CTR's and Cooper S's, 0 - 60 in 8 seconds dead, 30-70 in 7.8.
Have had a Volvo T5 and a Fiat Coupe turbo and neither seemed that much quicker (well the Fiat was a bit when it worked, which wasnt often). Not sure how it fares in the heavier 9-5 and 9000, surely there must be a mega mile HPT 2.3 available anyway ?

Sounds like a good time to ebay my XJR! The bodywork's terrible and it misfires at idle, but it's never actually stopped working in 3 and a bit years. It looks so tatty I'm ashamed to trade it in
322/378 from a s/c 4 litre 6... when it was new anyway.

Point take, I was saying that the LPT engine is pretty good and can be found in older cheaper Saabs, the GM 900 is dead cheap now, though its even wobblier than the 9-3 handling wise its still basically the same unit, a few turbo variations available (185 bhp I think), ditto the 9000. Dont bother with non turbo 4 cylinder Saabs, slow and rubbish, the 9-3 N/A 2.0 is 130 bhp rather than 150 bhp but the performance difference is massive, there are V6 Saabs out there but why bother.
I suppose it just dpeends on how well a car of that age goes, some can be well worn in and very quick, as opposed to knackered. Generally they are reliable and the fuel ecomomy is going to be better than any v6, i.e nearer 30 mpg than 20.
Or buy 5 * Rover 800's, could even get a Coupe one, that confuses people when they try to get in the back.
