Insurance is made up of many factors, all boiling down to risk. I've got one of the fastest cars on the road and it's £150 fully comp per year. My other car, Audi A6 is c£400. Basically there's more chance of the audi being nicked, cost a LOT more to fix when broken etc.

Crazy stuff that isn't it.

They hear the word "modified" then whack a huge premium on you. Don't they realise that some of us people who "modify" their cars aren't complete nuggets...?

Makes you wonder......

Some companies just don't do modified cars. If you do modify the car, the insurance company is not set up to deal with mods so they just bung a huge premium on the top. To them it is not worth the risk and they don't really want your business.

Best to talk to a specialist if you are trying to insure a modified car.

I have found that the new Admiral Multicar policy is very good VFM. I have 3 cars on it with a total value of about 50k and it costs me £1400 with Class 1 business and protected NCB on all 3 cars.

Its not the mod's per se, but Modded Fabia drivers that are the problem. Too many of them are chucking them off the road, so much so that some mod friendly insurers won't touch them anymore.......

Which is a bummer seeing as I have a Fabia vRS which I want to remap next year.

Having read the tales of clutches dying on Briskoda, I will be leaving my vRS Fabia standard. If I'm going to mod anything, I'll mod the Scooby, as it can quite literally handle the extra power, unlike the already slightly roly-poly vRS.

I've done 17000 miles now and 10000 of those have been modified with no problems at all from my clutch. From what I read on Briskoda, its how you drive it that causes the clutch slip........i.e. no mechanical sympathy = buggered up clutch

Mind you I may well switch mine back to standard for the winter months.....

Exactly - why would you have a car chipped if you intended to drive it like a granny? You wouldn't. You'd cane it. Hence the worry.

I've done 17k too, since Feb in mine, and I still can't see the point of it being chipped. It's fast enough to overtake. It wheelspins in 3rd in the wet, and to be honest, it's already bordering on being too fast for its own good anyway

I suppose I might have a different view if it was my only car though...

Exactly Duck, it is my only car and I know deep down it is not 'proper fast' but the chippin just gives me a slight illusion having not had a proper reference on fast for the last 18 months.....its a bloody cheap illusion to run 2

The cost, especially if it blows up every 10,000 miles. And the inconvenience etc. If I wanted unreliable, I'd have bought a Punto or a Clio

My remapped Fabia vRS never had a problem with the clutch in 10,000 miles. I also dont agree you remap 'to cane it' - there is little point trying to get a Fabia vRS quickly off the line standard or modded - it is never going to handle it. The beauty of the remap gives you (well it gave me) better top end and more linear power. Well worth it in my opinion.

worked out like this.

1)take the day of the week numbered 1-7 (starting on a thursday throught ill wednesday)

2)times it by the number of cats in the street (averaged at 12)

3)add the number of spokes the wheels have to the number of ocupants

4)if the car is cool add a zero to the end

5)if not divided by half

6) if the driver is under 30 add a zero again

7) if the driver has any points add a zero

8)if the car is anywhere other than fort nox or armed gaurded car park 24/7 add a zero

so easy one that,,, i think?????

The "linear delivery" - did that mean you effectively lost the kick-in-the-back ooomph from the turbo? If so, I'm even less interested in having mine chipped, as that's half the fun.

Top end? You're over the legal limit at 2100rpm in 6th

I sold my fabia vrs but I still have the new generation dastek unichip module that took it to 189bhp and 311lbft. I still have the before and after rolling roads to prove it.

I wanted an invisible mod, and this kind of unichip is a complete ecu that plugs in series with the standard ecu via a custom made and very impressive loom adapter.

It cost me nigh on £500 including mapping, and now I have no outlet to sell it.

It is completely remappable and switchable between cars simply by buying a new loom adapter from dastek for £80.

plus fuel consumtion improved by 5mpg.

No use to me so if anyone wants it for £200, it is yours, complete with loom adapter to fabia vrs.

Nope the only mod I've got is the one-click. I spend 90% of my time on the motorway so I don't worry too much about the handling. One reason I have the chip is the in-gear oomph is great when making some progress.

I've had this car for about 19 months now an absolute record for me. For me its 'good enough' as a car. I got sick of losing 5 grand here and there.

One day I'll get a nice motor when the Fabia is old enough to be treated as the second car hack!.
