MKIII Golf GTI 8V stutter problem
Hi there - thought I'd post it here since this BBS is a fountain of all knowledge !
Got a 1996 Golf GTi 8V as a runner for work. 67kmiles and FVAGSH.
Recently had all plugs , rotor/cap replaced since it was stalling.
It starts and runs fine 99% of the time.
However - when its warmed up and doing say a constant 70 or 80mph on the motorway it will suddenly stutter with a temporary loss of power (revs drop etc). After about 1 sec its back to normal. It doesn't seem to do it under load as such - just at constant cruising speeds.....
Anyone any clues ?
Does the car have a MAF ?? Could that be it ?
I can't see it ever having had new spark plugs - so I thought would be a good start......
HELP ! before the thing lets me down

I have just had a similar problem with my wife's MK3 although ours would start cutting out when fully warmed up, turned out to be the crankshaft sensor, although I ended up replacing the temp and lambda sensors as well, hope it helps

Cheers for the info.
Its going in for some diagnostics. I'm 99% sure its a sensor issue.
I get the feelihg it will cut out eventually if I don't do something sharpish !

There were a few threads on this a while ago (my mum's car had same problem). On quite a few cars, where it's not the relay for the fuel pump, lambda or the cam sensor it turns out to be a dry joint. You need a good garage or auto electrician as it wont show up on a diagnostics. Think it cost about £50 labor as the guy we used had to check about 50 wires before he found the right one - then £20 to re-solder it. Now it's fine. Seems to eb a common problem of the mark III with that age and mileage.

Right...........
The car has had 2 x relays (fuel pump, ignition), throttle body clean, new sparks/HT leads/Distributor
It still does it - and has also started to stall once warm (intermittent) - especially after a good motorway run.
Diagnostics has come up with nothing......
Is it worth getting all the sensors changed ?????? Or should it go in the local paper !
Where is the 'dry joint' problem ??
Thanks in advance.

A dry joint is where the solder in any wiring/on a circuit board has cracked, and hence the elctrical connection isn;t very good/fails. YOuneed a good garage/auto electrician to check each and every wire until he finds the fault - it took our garage 2 hours - i.e £90 labour.
p.s. a dry joint wont show up on a diagnostics test - but his seems to be a very common problem with the Mark III car around this age. Hope you get it sorted.
